She Bought a Tripod From Best Buy That Wouldn’t Work. Then the Return Policy Left Her With Nowhere To Turn: ‘All I Wanted Was Some Clarity’

Was the attitude necessary?

A March 2026 video by Rylee Sage, @rylee_sage on TikTok, about a Best Buy associate refusing to exchange a defective Sunpak tripod she bought exactly 30 days earlier is doing the rounds. Sage says that the screw that secured the camera plate was loose and spun freely, making it impossible to mount anything. She brought the tripod back in its original packaging, plus a smaller replacement she had already picked out, only to be told she was outside the return window.

The associate allegedly smirked, handed her a warranty slip with no phone number, and sent her on her way. Sage walked out with the new tripod, a $0 refund, and a promise to never return to that location. The video has become a lightning rod for anyone who has ever felt powerless against a big-box return policy.

Sage’s frustration is about the gap between the customer-service script and the in-store reality. She’s worked retail herself and knows policies exist for a reason. What she wanted – clarity, not an exception – was something the associate refused to give.

Best Buy’s standard return window is 15 days for most products

This goes up to 60 days for My Best Buy Plus members. Defective items are technically eligible for return or exchange within that window, but the policy is enforced inconsistently. Sage’s experience shows how easily a simple return can turn into a time-consuming dispute when staff are unwilling to explain the rules or offer alternatives.

This is a long video but I needed to rant to someone about the customer service at this Best Buy location today #bestbuy #customerservice #badcustomerservice #defectiveproduct #returns

She didn’t even know the 15-day window existed because she didn’t ask for a receipt and couldn’t remember the purchase date. The associate never mentioned it until Sage was already at the counter, and even then, the explanation was delivered with what Sage described as a belittling smirk.

The warranty slip the associate handed her was supposed to include the manufacturer’s phone number, but it didn’t. Instead, it listed the product’s serial number, the transaction date, and the store location – information Sage pieced together to realize she was exactly 15 days too late.

Sage’s video isn’t an outlier

Shoppers have been complaining about Best Buy’s return policies for years, especially the 15-day window, which is shorter than many competitors. Target and Walmart both offer 30 days, and Amazon’s return window is 30 days for most items, with some categories extending to 90 days. Best Buy’s policy is particularly tough on tech accessories, which customers often don’t use immediately. If you buy a tripod for a future project and don’t open it until day 16, you’re out of luck.

The policy also creates a Catch-22 for shoppers who lose their receipts. According to Consumer Affairs, Best Buy’s official stance is that returns without proof of purchase may be denied or limited to store credit. Sage didn’t have her receipt, so she couldn’t prove the purchase date. The associate could have looked it up in the system, but she didn’t offer to, leaving Sage to guess whether she was within the window.

It’s a common issue. Many shoppers assume they can return anything as long as they have the product and packaging, but Best Buy’s policy is stricter. If you don’t have the receipt, the burden is on you to prove the purchase date, and if you can’t, the store can refuse the return.

Best Buy’s return policy has other quirks that can trip up shoppers

Opened electronics are usually returnable, but missing accessories or packaging can lead to partial refunds or outright denials. Activate-able devices like phones and tablets carry a $45 restocking fee if returned opened, and certain high-end products – drones, cameras, projectors – can incur a 15% restocking fee. Laptops are an exception; they don’t have a restocking fee, even if opened, as long as they’re returned in like-new condition with all components.

The policy also treats open-box items the same as new ones, which can be a double-edged sword. Open-box products are often cheaper, but they’re also more likely to have missing accessories or cosmetic damage. Best Buy’s policy says open-box items are returnable within the same window as new products, but shoppers have reported receiving open-box items that were mislabeled or incomplete.

Best Buy’s return policy isn’t all bad. If the store’s price drops within your return window, you can request a price match without having to return and rebuy the item. It’s a small consolation, but it’s one of the few ways the policy works in the customer’s favor. The store also allows returns of gifts in-store for store credit, which is useful if you want to exchange a present without involving the original buyer.

But those bright spots don’t change the fact that Best Buy’s return policy is designed to protect the company, not the customer. The 15-day window is short, the enforcement is inconsistent, and the burden is on the shopper to know the rules.

Sage’s video is a perfect example of how that plays out in real life

She didn’t ask for special treatment. She just wanted to know why the policy worked the way it did, and why a defective product couldn’t be exchanged. The associate’s attitude – smirking, unhelpful, and unwilling to explain – made her feel like she was the one in the wrong.

Sage’s video is a reminder that return policies are about both rules and communication. A 15-day window is short, but it’s workable if the store is transparent about the deadline and willing to help customers navigate it. Best Buy’s policy fails on both counts. The window is too short, and the enforcement is too rigid.
