Shaq’s Latest Collab Is With… Archie Comics?!

Shaquille O’Neal wears a lot of proverbial hats. In addition to being an NBA legend, a near-endless source of memes, and the star of one of the weirdest Mandela Effects in popular culture, he’s also the spokesperson for a lot of things. On a recent trip to Office Depot, I could see at least half a dozen different cardboard cutouts of O’Neal promoting various products in my field of view. An argument can be made that he’s the closest real-world equivalent we have to Krusty the Clown from The Simpsons… and now, he’s bringing that name recognition into the world of comics.
Last week, it was announced that O’Neal has partnered with Archie Comics on a new original comic series titled Vengeance Unchained: The Legend of Black Caesar. The series will be penned by fan-favorite writer Stephanie Williams (Nubia & the Amazons, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur), with art by Ray-Anthony Height (Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Strange Academy) and Studio Sky-Tiger.
As the title suggests, Vengeance Unchained is based on the myths and legends surrounding “Black Caesar”, a real-life West African pirate who was a part of Blackbeard’s crew. According to Archie Comics’ official description for Vengeance Unchained, the series follows an African king of extraordinary physical presence who “must navigate the brutal transformation from royalty to slavery to piracy, searching for his kidnapped love while discovering that freedom in the Caribbean comes only to those willing to take it by force.”
“Growing up I always loved stories about warriors who refused to quit,” O’Neal said in a statement. “Black Caesar starts as a king, loses everything, and takes his freedom back on his own terms. That’s the kind of story I want to help tell. We built something that’s going to entertain you and make you think, and I’m ready for the world to see what we created with Archie Comics, an iconic brand I have been a big fan of for many years. Archie has such an incredible legacy of storytelling and being able to collaborate with a brand that has meant so much to generations of fans made this project even more exciting for me.”
“We are beyond thrilled to be partnering with Shaquille O’Neal and Authentic Studios for this new, one-of-a-kind project,” echoed Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater. “Shaq is not only one of the greatest basketball players of all time, but a superstar on and off the court, as a sports analyst, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and overall celebrity. A partnership between two pop culture icons like Shaq and Archie is one for the ages. This project brings forth excellence in storytelling like only Archie can provide, with the expert guidance of Shaq and his team; it’s sure to be the comic event of the year.”
When Is Archie Comics Rebooting?
The announcement of Vengeance Unchained comes as Archie Comics is preparing to launch its biggest publishing initiative in years later this year. In December of last year, they announced a partnership with Oni Press on a series of new comics and graphic novels, followed by original middle grade and young adult graphic novels in 2027, starring Archie’s roster of characters. There will also be a massive effort to reprint previous Archie titles, in formats like compact digest editions, deluxe hardcovers and omnibi, and comprehensive box sets.
This will be led by a new Archie series in September of 2026 written by W. Maxwell Prince (Ice Cream Man, Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum) with art by Fábio Moon (Daytripper, Casanova) and Nick Cagnetti (Spirit of the Shadows, Pink Lemonade), followed in October by Sabrina the Teenage Witch by Corinna Bechko (EC Comics’ Blood Type, Green Lantern: Earth One) with art by Kano (EC Comics’ Cruel Universe, Gotham Central), and Archie in Hell by Patrick Horvath (Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, Free for All) and Tyler Crook (Out of Alcatraz, Harrow County) in November.
“Mark your calendars: 2026 is going to be a major milestone for one of the most important brands in comics, as an immensely talented cast of creators comes together to simultaneously honor and reinvent Riverdale in ways never before attempted,” Oni Press Publisher Hunter Gorinson told IGN at the time. “We’ve been working behind the scenes for many months now to assemble an ambitious, multi-year plan that will see Archie, Betty and Veronica, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and so many more of these beloved comics icons step into hugely inventive new series that will channel Archie’s distinct storytelling power and joyful spirit for this unique moment in American history. Much like the Barbie movie or All-Star Superman before them, these are stylish and bold introductions that will tell us everything we need to know about these characters – and a lot about ourselves, too. We’re aiming to make these no less than the most compelling, surprising, and compulsively readable new series of the year, full stop.”
