Being a server isn’t for the weak. The typical long, grueling hours while balancing a multitude of tasks on their shoulders and tending to difficult customers’ needs can be exhausting.

And a rush exacerbates these feelings tenfold. As the customers flood in, the responsibilities pile up; anything extra can be an inconvenience. Even something as minor as a chocolate milk request was enough to get under this server’s skin. But not everyone is sympathetic.

In a six-second video, server Sierra (@sisisigs) shares how “‘a four-year-old ordering chocolate milk mid rush will forever be the bane of my existence.” Now, serving chocolate milk for a child should be simple, right? All you have to do is grab a small bottle from the fridge or pour a glass of this premade beverage. At least, that’s the assumption. Nope, think again, as she demonstrates the entire process that can disrupt her workflow.

First, she squirts a generous amount of Hershey’s chocolate syrup into a plastic cup of milk. Next, she stirs the contents with a plastic straw and pours them into a separate cup to blend them. Then, the content creator returns the mixed ingredients to the original cup. Finally, Sierra adds a splash of Hood Whole Milk and shuts the completed drink with a red lid.

Viewers Are Divided

Sierra’s video amassed 5.6 million views, igniting a heated debate in the comments section, with many leaning towards criticism.

“Oh no you have to do your job,” one viewer remarked sarcastically.

“She had time to set her camera up tho to film this,” another noted.

“A 4 year old is a person too. They are allowed to have a drink also,” a third stated.

However, alleged servers resonated with this complaint.

“Oh my GOD yes. Forever wishing the restaurant would just buy a [expletive] gallon of chocolate milk so I don’t have to make it,” one commenter agreed.

“It’s not about the chocolate milk or the kid talk. It’s about [how] we gotta [spend] 5 minutes making the [expletive] thing while being triple sat and the kid doesn’t even drink it. They just mix their fries into it,” a second echoed.

Is It A Big Deal?

This sentiment was echoed in an r/Serverlife subreddit. Redditors who worked in restaurants where chocolate milk was made in-house felt like it was a hassle. Even a couple of them had lied about this particular beverage’s availability, regardless of rushes. Hence, some found it a relief that their workplace has pre-made chocolate milk instead. Each restaurant varies, including whether they have a recipe or purchase it store-bought.

Other Server Pet Peeves

Without a shadow of a doubt, servers don’t have an easy job. In fact, Homebase reports the average national turnover rate for restaurant employees is 75%, and 41% for servers.

Servers encounter various personalities, behaviors, and demands. Besides Sierra’s, theren are other grievances, such as ordering ice water for an entire group, chugging sodas, and leaving no tips, that are among the few that have gone viral. Depending on the person, these small exasperations manifest into bigger ones and accumulate over time, leading some to throw in the towel.

Homebase reports the average national turnover rate for restaurant employees is 75%, and specifically 41% for servers. The outlet puts difficult customers under the ‘burnout and poor work-life balance’ category due to the contribution of the emotional overload that causes servers to quit.
