In the clip, which has amassed 12,000 views, TikTok user not a quick question (@housecatchronicles) responded to a comment from a previous post.

“I once had a 4 top come in,” the comment from user robin_thick86 read. “One of the guys paid for the bill and left cash on the table. Him and his wife left early. The second couple took the tip. A table next to them let me know.”

It reminded the TikTok user of an experience of her own.

A tale of a tip and a rude customer

According to @housecatchronicles, she once served a table with two couples.

When it was time to pay, one of the men from the group decided to cover the bill and give the server a generous tip.

“He hands me some cash, which I look at, and I see that it is five twenty-dollar bills,” she explained.

She instantly realized it was a very “generous” tip.

The man wanted to make sure the server was “taken care of.”

Allegedly, his friend was notorious for being a bad tipper, and he didn’t want to risk the server being shorted after her hard work.

So he decided to foot the bill because he and his wife were leaving early.

The other couple remained at the table finishing their dessert, so the server decided to still check in with them.

That’s when things got weird.

The other man that remained at the table with his wife immediately asked about the tip.

“And how much money did he give you?” the customer asked. “Because I know he gave you too much money.”

The shocked server refused to disclose the amount she was tipped.

That didn’t stop the customer from continuing to badger her.

Ultimately, the interaction left the server absolutely confused.

Are difficult customers common in the service industry?

There has been a significant rise in reports of burnout among service industry workers.

Unruly customers have driven much of that rise by taking a toll on these workers.

According to a 2025 study that polled 21,000 frontline employees, an overwhelming number have experienced unruly customers.

It found that 53% of employees who deal directly with the public experienced verbal abuse or unruly behavior from customers.

Workers struggling to manage difficult employees have resulted in higher turnover rates for frontline workers.

Commenters back the server

In the video’s comments section, most agreed that the man’s behavior was inappropriate.

“This is WILD,” user Story of a Vagabond wrote.

“Nope. If someone else is paying (or has already paid), the MOST I’ll ask the server is if they were taken care of, but not an amount,” user Super Dave commented.

They also did not expect the server to disclose the tip amount.

“I would’ve told him to ask his friend the next time he talks to him,” user bsm855 commented
