San Diego Comic Con Goers Were Taking Photos With a Deadpool Cosplayer. Fans Were Surprised at the Reveal: ‘You Wanna See What’s Under This Mask?’
The annual San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) had a bunch of exciting surprises for Marvel fans. But aside from the announcement of the Ghost Rider reboot casting, fans were shocked after the identity of one Deadpool cosplayer was unmasked.
Cosplayers are a regular sight at SDCC. There were several Marvel cosplayers roaming the convention, but one Deadpool stood out from the crowd. Instead of donning the signature red and black colors, this cosplayer wore a custom gray denim suit. It’s something that not even the Wolverine & Deadpool movie has seen, and that movie had a ton of Deadpools from different universes.
Fans and other cosplayers started taking photos with the Deadpool in gray. In one picture, the gray Deadpool was seen with a Wade Wilson cosplayer and another red Deadpool. But there have been many silly photos captured with other con-goers, with one featuring Deadpool hugging Olaf from Frozen. He posed with kids, non-cosplayers, and fans.
Then, the mysterious Deadpool also showed off his uncanny dance moves, which were accurate as far as the Marvel Cinematic Universe was concerned. Deadpool is known to be footloose and wacky to a fault. But con-goers didn’t initially think much of it. After all, most cosplayers do their best to stay in character.

But then, the Deadpool in denim crashed into Marvel Hall H of the event and took the mic, pretending to ask questions about Avengers: Doomsday.
“Who’s the guy with the swords and stuff?” asked Robert Downey Jr., slated to play Doctor Doom in the upcoming film. He noticed the mysterious-looking Deadpool just below the stage.
At first, the man introduced himself as ‘Ricky,’ writing himself off as a random cosplayer.
“Where was Thor, and why is he crying?” Ricky addressed the question to Paul Rudd.
“He’s a Wrexham fan,” the actor said.
“You know goddamn well why he was crying, Rudd,” Ricky said. The question appears to be related to a scene in Wolverine & Deadpool,where Thor was sobbing with an injured Deadpool in his arms. Nevertheless, the panel has left it unexplained.
“Second question. This seems like an awfully expensive way to announce a film. When do you start filming?” Ricky asked, and the rest of the panel said that it’s already “in the can.” They also didn’t confirm whether or not there could be last-minute additions—possibly a cast member—to the film.
But just as Ricky was walking off, the panel later revealed that the man beneath the denim suit is none other than the real Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds.
Reynolds would later tweet on his official X account, “No handlers, no security, no ropes. WHAT A GIFT. Thanks to everyone I met, who aren’t only cosplaying but world-building. And also… actual Sergeant Slaughter!”
Fans share what it’s like to bump into Ryan Reynolds
The reveal earned several gasps from the audience. It seems that Reynolds truly leaned into his character during SDCC. But fans also shared their experience of bumping into Reynolds during the convention.
One Captain Rex cosplayer on TikTok said that Reynolds spoke to him in fluent French. And then, the actor allegedly told the cosplayer, “You wanna see what’s under this mask?” It’s unknown if they took the offer, but it would have been a shock if they did.
A fan wrote, “Thanks so much for asking for the photo with me, Ryan! Had no idea. A memory I’ll share for life!” Attached to this message was a photo of the fan and Reynolds in the denim suit.
There were also social media users who praised Reynolds for the cameo, saying that other actors should do more random appearances for the sake of fans.
The reveal surprised so many that fans even came up with a new theory called ‘Deadpool’s Law.’ As one social media user from X explained, in every comic convention a person goes to, they have to take a photo with every Deadpool cosplayer because there is a non-zero chance that one of them is Ryan Reynolds.
