When Dick met Jason.

Today is a big day for DC comics fans, as it is both #BatmanDay and the official launch day of DC Universe. DC Universe posted a twenty-minute long introductory video to DC Daily, which will be the streaming service’s news round-up show that is (inexplicably) hosted by like, twenty people. Will they be tag-teaming coverage? Producing standalone segments? The hosts include Torchwood‘s John Barrowman, Samm Levine (Freaks and Geeks) and several other personalities.

The team introduced an exclusive new clip from the upcoming Titans, which features our first look at Jason Todd played by Curran Walters (20th Century Women) at 1:56 into the video. While we already knew that the series centered on Dick Grayson/Nightwing (Brenton Thwaites), we’ve only recently found out that Jason Todd will be joining the series. In the clip, we see young Jason introducing himself as the “new Robin” and talking about what a kickass gig he has. Batman even lets this new Robin drive the Batmobile, a privilege that Grayson never got to enjoy. Hmm, I think that explains the F-bomb he drops in this summer’s trailer.

We’re still a month away from the Titans premiere, so we’ll have to wait and see how the Robin rivalry plays out, and if Jason Todd will suffer the same fate in the series that he did in the comics. I think the idea of dueling Robins has a lot of potential, as does Batman’s unequal treatment of his wards and how it shapes them. I am less enthusiastic about Todd’s spiky mid-2000s hair, but we’ve already seen via Starfire that the wigs on this show are awfully wiggy.

Thwaites said of Todd’s introduction, “Jason has filled my job,” Thwaites told EW of Jason’s introduction, “When I left, I was under the impression that Batman didn’t have a Robin, and Jason basically shows up at a weaker of my moments and saves me, essentially, and tells me he’s the Robin working for Batman. I guess there’s a sense of jealousy and remorse and a little bit of anger and frustration for Jason.”

Thwaites continued, saying “So, Dick is trying to teach him that the things that he is doing and the morals that he stands for aren’t necessarily good, and there’s a lot of conflict and tension just based around what their modus operundi is — what Jason fights for and the reasons why he fights crime aren’t necessarily the same as Dick Grayson, and I feel like Dick is trying to mentor him and teach him a different way and Jason doesn’t want a part of it.”

Stay tuned for Jason Todd angrily screaming “you’re not my real dad!” at Dick Grayson before speeding off in the Batmobile.
