Is it a surprise that a Reddit theory about Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame is sexist? Absolutely not. We’ve pretty much seen it all in regards in the way that some trolls have been reacting to and attacking Carol Danvers and Captain Marvel.
Basically, certain organized groups of vocal men don’t want the movie to succeed and are willing to trash Captain Marvel on Rotten Tomatoes to the point where the site has had to ban early fan reviews and comments because the movie was being attacked for no reason. By people who had not seen it yet.
So, when a redditor claiming to be a Marvel “insider” posted about Marvel’s plans for including Carol Danvers in Avengers: Endgame, it showed that either the writer or Marvel itself has some seriously sexist knives out for Captain Marvel and other Marvel ladies. They claim that not only was Carol’s role going to be cut down in Endgame if her stand-alone failed but, also, apparently, that the only character to remain dead out of Avengers: Infinity War would be Gamora.
A woman—being touted as Marvel’s most powerful hero—would be diminished in an entirely different film because her own movie didn’t do well? Interesting. The “insider” asserts that the Avengers will be using the Quantum Realm in order to go back in time to stop Thanos. Which is basically a theory that any fan who has watched the movies or read the comics can come up with. Which all of us have been talking about for months. There are a lot of plot “details” in their leak that certainly seem plausible, yet it’s hard to move on from the fact that the whole thing revolves around what seems to be an extensive critique of Captain Marvel and Brie Larson.
Regarding the movie, oh boy, I don’t know what to say. To be honest, the script went through profound alterations. I’ll tell you a huge one: Captain Marvel.
The Russo Brothers and McFeely/Markus didn’t want to include Captain Marvel at all on Infinity War and on Endgame. They felt the story deserved to end up with the original characters, but Disney and Marvel Studios desperately wanted to introduce Carol Danvers on Avengers Infinity War. The idea was to later give her own origin movie boosted up by the Avengers.
Naturally, they had an argument that ended up with both sides making concessions. They excluded Captain Marvel from Infinity War but had to include the character on Endgame. Just to shut off this matter, the Captain Marvel rant we are seeing today was expected by Disney. Their social media numbers projected the CM movie to face challenges and they ordered from everyone involved to prepare for two cuts: one with the original CM plan, another cutting down the character’s participation in case Captain Marvel flops. This created huge conflicts between Brie Larson’s agency and specially Marvel Studios. They went as far as to shoot some of the very same Captain Marvel action scenes with Captain America and Black Widow replacing the character in an attempt to keep the inflated budget down. Brie Larson treats everyone well but she’s very contesting and she contested the hell out of this decision, until Marvel Studios was forced to shoot those scenes in different days, which resulted in more spending.
“She’s very contesting” is an incredible way to describe someone. She contested. Adding it to my rotation. Why not just say difficult, which this writer is clearly trying to imply. Also, the idea that the Russos resisted her inclusion because they just wanted the original Avengers to finish the story? Is this writer forgetting that most of the action in Infinity War revolved around the Guardians of the Galaxy, focused heavily on newer characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, and entered its main action on Earth in Wakanda?
The idea that Marvel would take Carol Danvers’s role and make it much smaller if her movie underperformed is pretty atrocious. Avengers: Endgame comes out less than two months after Captain Marvel. So, they would spend all that time editing the movie again? Or would they have two versions of the same film ready to go and release whichever one doesn’t have that much Carol in it?
What’s the truth? Are we going to see this version of Avengers: Endgame or was this just a ploy to put a bad taste in our mouth about Captain Marvel? And I hope that we don’t have to watch the funeral of Steve Rogers because while I’m aware that could happen (again, not quite the stuff of insider’s leaks), I don’t know that my heart can handle it. Tony Stark retiring, though? That is the only thing that checks out.
