Fast-food sliders are a beloved hassle-free treat. And, like the Pittsburgh creator Brianna (@bstok), most of us enjoy it with some boneless chicken tenders. But her recent slider order at Arby’s allegedly turned into a bizarre, bone-chilling culinary surprise.
In a lighthearted TikTok storytime, Brianna detailed the unexpected object she encountered while biting into Arby’s Buffalo Chicken Slider. She initially assumed it was a personal misinterpretation of the recipe. But it soon turned into a drive-thru return that left even the local staff baffled.
A hard, unexpected crunch
The incident unfolded after Brianna ordered a Buffalo Chicken Slider from her local Arby’s drive-thru. Taking a bite of the sandwich, she was allegedly met with a sharp, hard crunch that immediately made her stop chewing.
Upon pulling the object from her mouth, she realized she was holding an actual piece of bone. Confused, Brianna checked online to verify the sandwich’s ingredients. To her relief, the website actually listed that the slider comes with chicken tender.
Holding a bone from what was supposed to be a standard boneless chicken tender, she joked about her initial disbelief. She wondered if customers were somehow expected to debone their own fast-food sliders.
Some delicacies like Texas’ Giant ‘Dinoritto’ are actually supposed to come with huge ribs. But Brianna’s order had to be tender. “And I thought, ‘Maybe I’m crazy. Maybe I’m supposed to open the sandwich, take out the bones, and then reassemble it.’ … No. It specifically says it comes with a tender.”
Realizing the hard piece was a processing defect, Brianna said she drove back around to the Arby’s window to hand over the evidence. Such processing defects aren’t uncommon, even with major fast-food chains like McDonald’s.
Drive-thru employees allegedly examined the fragment alongside the remaining sandwich before bringing it directly to the shift manager. Surprised by the rare processing flaw, the Arby’s manager purportedly admitted she had “never seen anything like this” on a boneless item. To make things right, the store team then immediately replaced her order and tossed in an extra sandwich free of charge.
Why stray bones occasionally slip through boneless poultry processing
Boneless chicken tenders are mostly mass-processed to remove frame structures. But mechanical deboning and automated cutting equipment occasionally miss small bone fragments or cartilage joints.
For fast-food chains like Arby’s, poultry suppliers utilize automated inspection systems and X-ray detectors to catch foreign material before packaging. However, small stray fragments can occasionally slip through quality checks. This leaves front-line staff to resolve the mistake when a customer returns to the counter.
Debriefing from her car with her fresh meal in hand, Brianna celebrated her successful drive-thru resolution. After all, biting into an unexpected bone is an unpleasant surprise. But a cooperative management team and a free extra sandwich make the return trip worthwhile.
