New York Woman Had an Unconventional Date Accessory: ‘I Wanna Use My Free Will’

It’s oftentimes a struggle to look put together on the first date. But Brianah Ree (@brianahree) from New York City has thought about wearing an interesting accessory to her next date, and her suggestion has raised eyebrows on the internet.
“So, I ordered an ankle monitor because I have a date coming up and I want to wear an ankle monitor,” Ree told TikTok. Not a lot of people would go to Depop or Poshmark and type “ankle monitor” for a date accessory. It may not even cross most people’s minds to buy one to wear on a first date. A simple bangle would’ve done the trick, but not for Ree.
“Dating has become so boring. I wanna use my free will, I wanna get inside the mind of a human being early,” she explained. Why all of it hinges on an ankle monitor has yet to be explained by Ree. It’s definitely an unusual conversation starter.
“Is he going to make it a conversation?” She brought up the possible reactions for when she wears one. Ree thought her date might even open the group chat with his homies and talk about how his date is unexpectedly wearing an ankle monitor and how he doesn’t plan to speak to her ever again.
What’s her villain origin story?
“I need to know if you’re going to ride with me this summer while I have this monitor on. Like, I need to know your intentions early on,” Ree said. It seems that she may be tired of all the mixed signals. There’s no better way to spot a good communicator than by putting an ankle monitor on. If they bring it up and stay, they might be a keeper for Ree.
Although there were people on TikTok found the suggestion strange, many encouraged Ree to go through with it.
One commenter wrote, “I’m not lying to my full potential.” If dates aren’t fun, Ree might have inadvertently triggered a new trend.
Another said, “What’s your backstory if they ask?” Ree didn’t disclose the story she might run with the poor man. Is she going to tell him she’s on house arrest? Perhaps she’s going for the probation story—in this case, for what? Ree has to come up with a villain origin story.
To encourage the scheme, one commenter suggested, “If he asks just say, ‘Oh, it’s actually an ongoing investigation and I’m not allowed to talk about it yet.'”
Another social media user added, “tell him netflix won’t let you speak about it at this time.”
It seems that many on TikTok couldn’t wait to see Ree push through with the plan. One commenter even suggested, “I’m begging you to please bedazzle or decorate the monitor. Like, really lean into it.”
Never a boring date
But other people online started talking about the jokes they’ve pulled during a date. One commenter said, “I asked a guy to go to open houses and act like we are married looking to buy and he said no. Asked another and he said yes. It was so fun and he’s actually considering buying one now.”
Meanwhile, another woman said, “I’ve been wearing mustaches all summer.” She attached photo evidence of it, and she was wearing a rainbow mustache like it was 2012. Dating doesn’t have to be a drag.
