New York City woman faced a break-in situation in her London rental. When she called for emergency, they told her to “go out and check” for the perp
She was defenseless at the time of the break-in.
Eva Schramm (@eva4eva___) from New York City was in her rental apartment in London when a break-in occurred. She recalled her experience on TikTok.
“I don’t even know how to get into this, but last night, my house got broken into, or rather, the flat I’ve been renting in London. It’s literally the scariest thing that’s happened to me in my life,” Schramm said. She explained that while in bed at 3:00 a.m. and on a call with her ex, she heard commotion in the hallway.
“There’s no way someone’s in the apartment,” Schramm claimed. It was late, and she had already turned all the lights off. While she was on the phone and under the covers, Schramm claimed that someone opened her bedroom door.
“Mind you, it’s like, pitch black. And this man walks in, and he’s just standing in my doorway, like a strange man, never seen him in my life—bald, big dude,” Schramm described. She said her bed was only a couple of feet from the door. It’s worse than seeing a familiar ghost by the doorway. Terrified, Schramm said she started screaming.
“I feel like my brain did not compute what was going on for a second, because I thought it was a neighbor coming in. But obviously, it makes no sense. Why would they be in my bedroom?” Schramm commented. In fear, she even threw her phone at the man while screaming. She made eye contact with the man, and she alleged that he just stood there, motionless, staring back at her. After that, the man slowly turned around and walked out of her room. “I didn’t know if he was still in the apartment. I was just assuming he was still in the apartment,” Schramm said.
Calling for help after the break-in
She shut the door, but Schramm said she had no lock. Schramm placed one hand on the door while using her phone to Google the UK emergency hotline. “My hands were shaking so badly, I couldn’t even type a thing,” she said. When her ex told her the emergency number, she hung up and called.
“Operators, no f****** sense of urgency whatsoever,” Schramm said. The woman on the other end of the line allegedly asked Schramm how she knew the suspect was still in her apartment. Schramm replied, saying she didn’t hear him leave.
“Can you go out and check?” Schramm recalled the operator’s alleged response. She did not follow through with the instruction, still afraid of the possible danger lurking outside her bedroom door. Schramm added, “Mind you, I’m b*** naked in all of this. It was a very hot night, so I’m standing there, naked, with one hand on the door, with a strange man in my apartment at three in the morning in a strange city.”
Schramm alleged that it took the police 25 minutes to come. When they came in to inspect, Schramm said the man left without stealing anything. Even though her laptop was by the door, it remained untouched. The police speculated that someone must have mistakenly entered her apartment while drunk, but Schramm said the man wasn’t stumbling at all.
“I packed up my s***. I got the f*** out of there,” Schramm said. She was supposed to stay in the rental for the summer but had decided to leave without turning back. Like Schramm, another woman decided to leave an Airbnb rental in the Appalachian Mountains after discovering an odd box in a forbidden room.
