Nothing to See Here, Not Two People Stacked on Top of Each Other in a Trench Coat at the AMC Lincoln Square

I love when cartoon logic makes its way into real life, whether its realizing that quicksand isn’t as big of a threat in adulthood, or figuring out the logistics of how one would eat a giant Scooby-Doo sandwich. Another hallmark has been the trope of kids standing on each other’s shoulders under a trenchcoat to sneak into somewhere… and the Internet is proving just how real that can be.

On Wednesday night, a tweet from @matthewivan77 began to go viral, after they spotted two people doing the exact bit at New York’s Lincoln Square AMC. As their caption puts it: “walking out of my movie at AMC Lincoln Square and seemingly was the only person to catch two girls trying to get into a movie dressed in a giant trench coat and disguise? i love new york city.”

“hahaha as we went down the escalator no one but me and the guy behind me were like wtf,” they wrote in a follow up tweet of someone sharing another POV. “it seemed like i was having a stroke glad your friend caught it hahaha”

The jokes, naturally, began to flow. Comparisons were made to the Little Rascals, Mary Kate and Ashley, Vincent Adultman from Bojack Horseman, and Eric Andre pranking a car dealership in my favorite bit from The Eric Andre Show. @PoorOldRoloTony got a laugh out of me for joking it was really just notoriously-tall actress Elizabeth Debicki after “another growth spurt”.

Hell Yeah!

But beyond that, there was a lot of genuine positivity surrounding the gag. Some showed their own POV of seeing the trenchcoated figure at the theatre, or just simply remarked that the kids are alright. Some also wondered about the logistics of actually doing the trenchcoat bit in real life, with @OttoFernandez rightly asking: “Did they trenchcoat when they got to the top or were they already trenchcoated going up the escalators?”

@PrototypeWright might’ve put it best: “Lmao NBS I’m glad that though some of the worst times there are ppl who have not lost their whimsy. You actually NEED to see nonsense like this to survive it all”

There are some questions around the bit that are still unanswered. Who are the two people involved? Why did they feel compelled to do this? One comment on the original tweet claims that “I believe they are on TikTok and they tend to do this a lot”, but I was unable to find an account that fits that bill. (There are, however, multiple one-off videos of people doing the bit in their local movie theater.)

My biggest question is: what movie were they seeing? Were they influenced by the word of mouth surrounding The Sheep Detectives, or trying to catch up on the latest The Devil Wears Prada and Mortal Kombat sequels? And did they buy two tickets, or just attempt to buy one? A part of me almost does not want to know the answer, because seeing the posts is delightful enough in and of itself.
