The striations of color and type revealed by erosion in the walls of the Grand Canyon have long been held up as the Earth version of the same striations in the slopes of Mount Sharp (more formally known as Aeolis Mons). But now that NASA scientists have taken the first snap shots with Curiosity’s long-range camera, they’re actually surprised by just how similar the two formations appear to be.

Just another series of photographs from Curiosity showing us a wonderful subversion of expectation: the alien… as the familiar.
