We’re gearing up for the premiere of Marvel’s latest Disney+ show (and the first to introduce a completely new hero) with Moon Knight! To get fans excited, Marvel released a behind-the-scenes look at the show where the cast and creatives talked about the excitement of bringing Moon Knight to life.
“The fun of Moon Knight is getting introduced to a new superhero in a new world,” Ethan Hawke said. “Every aspect of this show has a duality and we’ve shifted the paradigm.” Hawke is playing Arthur Harrow in the series, and while we all have theories about who Harrow really is, we’ve seen his cult-like leader traits in the trailer, and it is going to bring an interesting dynamic to the table between him and Marc Spector.
The star of the show loved the exploration the series gives to the character. “It’s a real, legitimate character study,” Oscar Isaac said about Moon Knight. “Our job was to put a lens on the things that had the most dramatic juice. And ultimately take the mental health aspect incredibly seriously.” He went on to talk about what excited him most about the show, saying, “For me, what’s really exciting is that it’s totally unpredictable.”
“Moon Knight is a spectacular character, he’s got an incredibly unique visual look,” Kevin Feige said, and look, he’s not wrong. The show did release a series of character poster for many of the characters and there is a very important one. (The one where he’s fixing his rolled up sleeve because come ON that’s … nice.)
“The way we’re tackling the series, we’re learning about Steven then we’re learning about Marc and they’re the same person,” director Mohamed Diab said, and that is what’s most fascinating about the show. The first we saw in the trailer was of Steven Grant, meaning that we’ve yet to meet Marc Spector (who has dissociative identity disorder), so how the alters will coexist in the series is still unknown to us.
May Calamawy, who plays Layla in the series, said, “The tone is like Fight Club meets Indiana Jones, it’s a bit dark at times.” She went on to talk about how the show brings in the supernatural aspects, as well. “To tie it into something so vast and supernatural, it’s amazing.”
The excitement of Moon Knight
What’s so fascinating about this Disney+ show in particular is that it is darker than we’ve seen the Marvel Cinematic Universe go. The Netflix era of the MCU did touch on harder topics and was generally grittier than the overarching MCU, but we haven’t see Marvel dive into heavy topics like mental health in the way that this series seems to be. The most we got was an exploration of Tony’s PTSD in Iron Man 3, and while I love how that movie informed his character arc for the rest of his time, Moon Knight is a completely different approach.
We’ll have to see how the show tackles all of Marc Spector’s alters, but from what little we’ve seen in the trailers, it’s going to take us on a journey through Steven Grant before we meet Marc, and I cannot wait!
