Mom asks for a crib at a Marriott hotel. Only to be left confused when staff gave her a laundry basket instead: ‘I have some questions’

A mother was traveling with her family when she encountered an unexpected and confusing situation at a Residence Inn by Marriott when she requested a crib for her baby, only to be given a laundry basket instead. The incident was shared by Shawna Lynn (@shawnaaa.lynnn) in a video on TikTok, which has since amassed over 26,800 views.
“What crib did you get when you were traveling in the United States?” Lynn asked viewers at the beginning of her video. In the on-screen text, she added, “POV your residence Inn by Marriott gives you something questionable for your baby to sleep in.”
Lynn then panned the camera to show what the hotel brought her—a Rubbermaid laundry basket, with what appeared to be a couple of bedding items folded inside, in an attempt to somehow make it comfortable for a baby. Naturally, this development only confused Lynn, as a laundry basket and a crib are nowhere near the same thing.
Marriott staff insists it’s a crib
“This is not a crib,” Lynn said, and couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of the situation. “If this is the crib that your hotel gives out, I have some questions.”
On her Instagram, Lynn gave curious viewers an explanation of how the incident came about. According to the mother, it was actually her sister who took the “crib” that was given when a staff member dropped it off at their room. She claimed that she was initially confused and wondered where the crib was, but the staff member only told her, “Sorry. It’s ugly, like, kind of ugly,” confirming that the laundry basket was, indeed, what they considered a crib.
Lynn’s sister said she decided to just accept the laundry basket, but admitted that she felt something was off when she saw the Rubbermaid brand name—which she believed was a food container brand. “Like, why are we giving this to babies?” Lynn’s sister asked. She ultimately decided to let Lynn handle the situation herself.
Lynn, upon seeing the laundry basket, said she enlisted the help of their father to resolve the issue. However, the sisters claimed that Marriott’s receptionist doubled down and insisted the laundry basket was a crib. Despite their father pointing out that the “crib” was metal and had toilet paper in it, the receptionist allegedly argued that it was just “in case the baby makes a mess.”
The entire incident might sound like a made-up scenario for content engagement, but Lynn claimed that the incident did, indeed, happen. “Tell me why I was like, ‘Is this guy okay?’” Lynn’s sister said.
It’s not safe to put a baby in a laundry basket
Viewers were equally baffled by the entire situation. “Lmao that bihh says Rubbermaid…I would’ve made them pull up the Rubbermaid website and show me that specific product being called a ‘baby bed’ bc no it’s a laundry cart tf,” a viewer said.
While some were amused by the incident, others were more concerned about the potential ramifications such a mistake can cause. “This is a huge liability for the hotel! What if someone actually put their baby in there and something happened!!” a viewer wrote.
The concern is valid, as putting a baby in a laundry basket for whatever reason poses a great risk to the child’s safety. According to Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation, collapsible laundry hampers, such as the one given to Lynn by the hotel, have metal wiring in them that can inflict minor injuries and pinch the skin should there be an accident. Not only that, but suffocation is also a possibility if the laundry basket tips over, as it’s not meant to handle the weight of a baby and its movements.
Fortunately for Lynn, the confusion was eventually remedied when the same person who gave the laundry basket returned to bring an actual crib and apologized for the mix-up. Although the incident still left Lynn feeling disturbed, saying, “But the fact that he argued with us, has me a bit concerned someone might actually put their kid in there hahahaha.”
