Missouri man goes to Lowe’s for a dryer. Then he spots a GE model for just $199: ‘Too good to be true?’

A Missouri man went to the Lowe’s Outlet store while looking for a dryer. Then, he saw a brand new GE model electric dryer for 75-percent off. The only catch? It had Spanish dials and Spanish instructions.
TikToker @knowstruggleknowprogress posted a video asking his audience whether there was something he was missing, because he was struggling to believe that was the only issue with the product.
He mentioned that the product only had Spanish instructions and that it might have a dent somewhere, but he questioned if there were any other details that were missing. His viewers, though, emphasized that the dryer was a steal and told him to brush up on his Spanish.
Why Was This GE Dryer Discounted?
The content creator was originally considering purchasing a dryer on Facebook Marketplace. Before he did, he took a pause and went to the local St. Louis Lowe’s outlet, where he saw a relatively perfect GE dryer with one “catch.”
The GE electric dryer he posted was originally $799.99. The price had jumped down to $199.75, an incredibly large discount. The reason why was simple; @knowstruggleknowprogress said that “ All the [expletive] dials is in Spanish. Yo hablo Español.”
A small glimpse of a red sticker in the TikToker’s video proved that the Spanish dial was the reason why the dryer was getting discounted, just as the TikToker explained. It’s a surprising fact, especially given the fact that Spanish is the most widely spoken non-English language in the country. It’s estimated that one in seven individuals ages five and up speak Spanish, according to 2024 Census research compiled by USA Facts.
The number of people who speak Spanish state by state does vary, though. In Missouri, around 2.86 percent of the population speaks Spanish, according to a language diversity study published by the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center in 2023. That can make it harder for inventory, such as a Spanish-dialled dryer, to move in certain areas. It may be a general policy to discount non-English language dryers, though, and not a decision the company made because of a regional context.
Was There Anything Else Wrong With It?
It was hard for the TikToker to believe the dryer was only discounted for having Spanish instructions. He asked in his video if there was an actual catch, but commenters did not point out any glaring issues. They were focused on the amazing deal that he was going to get if he bought the dryer.
“And just like that we learning Spanish,” one commenter said.
Another added, “I still would have taken it.”
“Scratch and dent” appliances typically have the exact same manufacturer quality guarantees. Lowe’s and other retailers discount outlet products because of minor defects, not major issues that would make them entirely unusable. While those products often have wear-and-tear, they usually are relatively dependable.
In a comment, @knowstruggleknowprogress told his audience that he did end up purchasing the dryer, a smart move according to many of his viewers.
