‘Mind y’all’: Woman went to Walmart for disinfecting wipes. Little did she know a run-in with laundry detergent would end in a $10,000 payday
Going to Walmart for one thing has a way of becoming a much bigger errand. For one woman, though, a trip for disinfecting wipes apparently became worth far more than anything she planned to put in the cart.
Bryia (@bryiabrenee) recalled in a TikTok video being in Walmart with friends during her senior year of high school when an ordinary walk toward the cleaning aisle went very wrong. What started as a quick stop for cleaning supplies, she claims, eventually ended with her receiving $10,000.
Of all things, laundry detergent was at the center of it. Walmart’s detergent aisle has certainly given shoppers something to talk about before, but Bryia was not worried about how much was inside a bottle. She needed to worry about what was already on the floor.
She definitely wasn’t expecting that
“Mind y’all, I lived in Louisiana at the time, but I’m from Houston,” Bryia explained. She had returned to Houston for the weekend, where she was catching up with her friends. Her best friend had recently gotten a car, so the group went to Walmart to pick up disinfecting wipes and other supplies to keep inside it.
Bryia recalled walking forward while looking backward as she talked with her friends. After spotting a sign for detergent and bleach, she headed toward the aisle without paying much attention to what was directly in front of her.
Her friends suddenly began screaming her name and telling her to look down. Bryia did and discovered what she described as a puddle of laundry detergent. She tried to take one careful step to get herself out of it, but instead, she slipped.
“I fell,” she recalled. This was no small stumble, according to Bryia. She compared it to a cartoon where a character first flies into the air before crashing back down. The impact was hard enough that Bryia claims she may have urinated on herself a little.
The embarrassment did not stop there, although it eventually came with an unexpected upside. Bryia called her mother and told her what had happened. According to her account, the incident ultimately resulted in a $10,000 settlement.
Bryia believes her mother could have filed a lawsuit and potentially pursued more money. She was already satisfied with the amount she received, especially considering how she viewed the alternative. “People fall for free every day,” she joked.
The money also arrived at a useful time. Bryia recalled receiving it shortly before she went to college, leaving her feeling grateful despite how embarrassing the original incident had been.
Her story has since drawn more than 23,000 views, with viewers finding plenty to say about the fall and the payout. “Let me go to Walmart,” one person joked. Another wrote, “Fall for free.” Someone else wanted details, asking, “How long did it take for them to pay u or offer it?”
The settlement itself also attracted attention. “10,000 is the automatic payout cause they don’t want to go to court iykyk,” one viewer claimed. However, Bryia’s video does not provide evidence that $10,000 is a standard Walmart payout. Settlement amounts can vary depending on the circumstances of an individual claim.
One commenter had a Walmart problem of their own, writing, “I need a lawyer they accused me of stealing and i do spark and had a cart check.” Getting stopped at the Walmart exit was not Bryia’s concern that day. Her trouble started before she ever made it that far.
Bryia’s problem came well before checkout. Years later, she can find the humor in an incident that once left her mortified. “I can laugh now but I was SO EMBARRASSED,” she wrote.
