“What’s this SNL sketch?” Melania Trump Presiding Over the UN Security Council Meeting Raises Eyebrows

First Lady Melania Trump presided over a UN Security Council meeting. She gave a speech about children in conflict, and the comments beneath the video didn’t miss the irony. Which got the attention of people online.
“My heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their heroes, who sacrificed their lives for freedom. Their bravery and dedication will always be remembered,” said Trump regarding the recent wars.
“The U.S. stands with all of the children throughout the world. I hope soon peace will be yours,” Trump wishes. But the commander in chief of the United States has ordered strikes against Iran, starting a new, regional conflict that risks the safety of U.S. allies and citizens alike.
Trump adds, “Enduring peace will be achieved when knowledge and understanding are fully valued within all our societies. The value placed on education by nations’ leaders shapes the core of their countries’ belief systems.”
“A nation that makes learning sacred protects its books, its language, its sciences, and its mathematics. It protects its future.” President Donald Trump placed the Department of Education in his crosshairs early in his second term. Book bans are still happening in public schools across state lines. Additionally, the Trump administration has revoked over 800 student visas over pro-Palestinian protests.
Perhaps the first lady needs to remember her husband’s stances on education and security. That, or elect a suitable speaker to preside over the UN Security Council—someone who can spell Trump’s agenda out loud.
An embarrassing spectacle
Commenters on YouTube were shocked by the first lady’s participation in the UN Security Council. One writes, “What’s this SNL sketch???” Another asks, “Please tell me this is just a bad dream.”
Regardless, the comments do not contest that the first lady is not an experienced speaker. To be placed in such an honorable diplomatic position requires a level of eloquence that has been studied for years. But it is also telling that President Trump chose to send his wife to the UN Security Council instead of a seasoned diplomat.
He hasn’t shied away from showing his disdain for the United Nations or diplomacy in general. Why would he start now?
