Man raises racial profiling concerns after he alleges differential treatment over cuticle clippers at Walmart: ‘I see what’s going on’

Fair point

Mikewillcutsmp is accusing a Walmart employee of treating him differently while he shopped. In a TikTok video he captioned “Store Policy…or Racial Profiling,” Mike said he went to an outlet of the retail chain and looked for cuticle clippers in the beauty department.

He noted that the items were locked and that a woman was already waiting in the section for her item to be unlocked. When an employee eventually arrived, the woman allegedly left with her item, but Mike claims that when it was his turn to retrieve his, the employee told him she needed to put it in a box.

Mike sensed something was wrong and immediately confronted the employee. “I said, ‘Well, why didn’t the lady have to put her stuff in a box? The one that you just held, the one that just grabbed the items before I did and walked away,’” Mike recalled telling her.

He said the employee tried to justify her actions by claiming that the products were different, but he kept emphasizing what he observed. He allegedly told her, “We grabbed from the same little, you know, door, like we were standing next to each other. Why do I have to put my item in a security box? She got to walk away with hers.”

The employee apparently apologized, but Mike wanted to escalate the matter to a senior. “I see
what’s going on. I’m gonna go tell your manager,” Mike recounted.

The footage then shows him approaching a man and requesting to speak with the employee’s supervisor, who turns out to be the manager. In the video, Mike recounts his experience to the manager, who then asks him to describe her appearance. When Mike identified her as a “short” Filipino woman, the manager confirmed he knew whom Mike referred to and apologized for the employee’s behavior.

Mike ended his video by thanking the manager for helping him in this situation. He said, “Got a brother as a manager and he know…I wasn’t wrong about what I felt.”

“Good job for sticking up for yourself”

Some people in the comments appreciated Mike for standing up for himself. One person wrote, “Good job for sticking up for yourself.” Another said, “I’m so glad you reported it to the manager.”

STORE POLICY… OR RACIAL PROFILING? ? This happened to me at Walmart in Palo Alto, California. I watched another customer come by, grab her item, and go about her business. But when it came to me, I was told my item had to be put inside a security box and locked up. So naturally, I asked: Why was the procedure different for me? I asked to speak with a supervisor because the whole situation made me feel like I was being singled out and racially profiled. Was this simply store policy being applied differently—or would you have felt profiled too? I really want to hear everybody’s opinion on this one. #RacialProfiling #ShoppingWhileBlack #Walmart #PaloAlto #customerexperience

A few people questioned Mike’s decision to still buy the items despite what happened. One person commented, “Stop shopping at Walmart you find those cutter at Tj max.” Another remarked, “And you still made the purchase at Walmart….”

A handful of people shared their experiences with Walmart. One person said, “They tried me while wearing a $2k YSL bag and paying with an Amex Platinum. It’s not about your ability to pay, it’s about their ability to degrade you. I NEVER went back and never will.” Another spoke about having an experience mildly similar to Mike’s. The wrote, “I just left Walmart because everything I needed was locked up. My usual Walmart don’t have anything locked up. Just grab and go. Should’ve went there instead.”

Walmart and Target have recently faced criticism, mainly fuelled by online rhetoric stemming from numerous complaints. This has led to calls for a boycott. Although social media discussions show some people are boycotting, many still shop there because these stores are undeniably convenient and resourceful, especially when you need something quickly.

With Mike’s story, Walmart has been shot back into popularity on social media.
