Madame Masque Will Face Off Against Agent Carter in Show’s Second Season

Get it? Face off?! I slay me.

As you know, Agent Carter is headed to Hollywoodland, and she’s even getting a proper nemesis to go with the new digs. According to an interview between /Film and Agent Carter‘s executive producers Tara Butters and Chris Dingess, Madame Masque will be there to rain on Peggy’s Hollywoodland debut. For those of you who aren’t familiar with her, she is a criminal mastermind who wears a golden mask. Simple, no?

Interestingly enough, Madame Masque is a character who’s usually placed in the modern day. She debuted in 1969, so there’s no 40s precedent set for her look or personality. But that hasn’t stopped the folks behind Agent Carter from taking her and bringing her back in time. They’ve even got a fantastic real world inspiration that they’re drawing from. Butters explained how they adapted Madame Masque for the Peggy era, saying:

I think we’ve changed the look of her a bit obviously. We’ve made her an actress, which is very Hedy Lamarr. She was a ‘40s siren actress who was also a scientific genius, so that’s part of what we’re mining with this character.

Many of you probably know Madame Masque was featured as a major villain in Matt Fraction/David Aja’s recently-ended Hawkeye run. She made Kate Bishop’s life a living hell when Kate ran off to Los Angeles. Her introduction to the Agent Carter universe essentially precludes a Fraction/Aja Hawkeye television show, much to many fans’ (and my) dismay.

Still. One can hope. At least we’ll always have Tumblr fancasts and fanscripts.

Sigh.
