Louisiana’s week of bloodshed continues as gunfire erupts in Baton Rouge mall, sending families scrambling for cover

One more life lost.

Louisiana is reeling after another devastating shooting, this time at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, where gunfire erupted between two groups and left one person dead and five injured. The violence unfolded just after 1 p.m. on April 23, 2026, near the food court, sending shoppers and families scrambling for cover. Police have detained five suspects but are still searching for others involved in what they’re calling a targeted dispute that spiraled into chaos.

According to NBC, Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. made it clear this wasn’t a random attack. “This was a disagreement, a fight between two different groups of people that we are still trying to unravel,” he said. “And unfortunately, innocent victims got caught in the crossfire.”

The victims, none of whom are suspects, include three high school seniors, according to Lafayette Parish Mayor-President Monique Blanco Boulet. One of the injured remains in critical condition, while the others suffered minor wounds.

Witnesses described a terrifying scene

Todd Terrell, president of the United Cajun Navy, was at the mall with a group he was assisting when he heard what he estimated to be 15 to 20 gunshots. “It sounded like a fully automatic gun,” he said. Terrell admitted he’d been craving chicken shawarma from the food court but had resisted because of his diet.

“Thank God I was sticking to my diet, because I would have been there,” he said. The timing of the shooting spared even more potential victims, as Terrell pointed out. “It could have been worse. It’s prom season. If it was later in the day there could have been more people there.”

The Mall of Louisiana released a statement expressing its devastation. “We are heartbroken and angered that our shopping center was the location for today’s horrific incident,” it said. The mall was shut down immediately after the shooting.

Police are urging anyone with cellphone video of the incident to come forward. Morse confirmed that surveillance footage helped officers identify suspects almost immediately, and the quick response from law enforcement, including an officer already stationed at the mall and a deputy in the parking lot, likely saved lives.

This incident comes just days after one of the deadliest mass shootings in Louisiana’s recent history

A father shot and killed eight children in Shreveport. The suspect, Shamar Elkins, was killed by police after a vehicle chase. Seven of the children were his own, ranging in age from 3 to 11, while the eighth was a cousin. The violence began early Sunday morning when Elkins shot his wife and another woman, believed to be his girlfriend, before turning the gun on the children. Most were found shot in the head, many likely while they slept.

Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith had struggled to process the horror of the scene. “I just don’t know what to say. My heart is just taken aback,” he told reporters. “I just cannot begin to imagine how such an event can occur.”

The coroner’s office identified the children as Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5. Elkins, who had a 2019 conviction for illegal firearm possession, served in the Louisiana Army National Guard but never deployed.

The back-to-back shootings have left Louisiana in a state of mourning

Gov. Jeff Landry, who also responded to the Shreveport massacre, issued a statement after the Baton Rouge mall shooting, saying, “Sharon and I are praying for those affected and are grateful for a quick response by our law enforcement officials.” Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux called the earlier killings “maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had in Shreveport.”

Baton Rouge Mayor Sid Edwards praised the community for coming forward with tips and evidence after the mall shooting. “People are starting to talk now,” he said. “I want to thank the people who contacted Crimestoppers and the people who had the video and the people who have the evidence. God bless you.”

The investigations into both shootings are ongoing, with police still piecing together motives and searching for additional suspects. In Baton Rouge, authorities believe handguns were used, and one firearm has been recovered. The Shreveport case involved a small-caliber handgun and a “rifle-style pistol” that Elkins had when he was killed.
