LAIKA, the studio behind Coraline and ParaNorman has a new action-adventure movie coming out, set in Japan. The cast includes Rooney Mara, Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Ralph Fiennes and George Takei.
The official synopsis reads:
Clever, kindhearted Kubo ekes out a humble living, telling stories to the people of his seaside town. But his relatively quiet existence is shattered when he accidentally summons a spirit from his past which storms down from the heavens to enforce an age-old vendetta. Now on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey (Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Matthew McConaughey) and sets out on a thrilling quest to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known.”
I really like this video because it gets me interested in the movie without being overly spoiler-y, something that I’ve gotten annoyingly used to whenever I watch other trailers. Also, we get a look at the really gorgeous animation which is no surprise, considering the studio, to some cool music. There’s also no dialogue in the trailer, which I thought added to my intrigue since there’s plenty to dissect and there’s none of Matthew “alright alright alright” McConaughey’s voice to throw me out of the experience.
The “two strings” in the title likely refer to the strings on the shamisen Kubo carries around, but the shamisen is a three stringed instrument (the name literally translates to “three strings”). We don’t get a close enough shot to see how many strings Kubo’s instrument has, but we do however see a mysterious woman on a boat with a three string shamisen parting the waters. I’m so invested in the story, and I don’t even know half the details! Is the quest going to go down Journey to the West style? Is the woman related to Kubo? I have to know!
The film doesn’t come out until August 2016, but I’m already sold (if you couldn’t already tell). What did you think of the trailer?
