iZombie Recap: “Zombie Bro”

Let's take shots—shots, shots, shots, shots!—at the new episode.

Dudeeeeee. Brooooo. It’s time to party with the iZombie gang, frat boy styles.

Now, I’m not suggesting we actually attend a frat party with the cast of iZombie (although, that could obviously be way more fun than an actually frat party!), but rather that we dig right into this week’s episode (“Zombie Bro”), which actually focused on a frat-set murder case and the bro brains that Liv had to eat to solve it. So grab an iced cold beverage of choice (no judgment, even if you’re reading this in the wee morning) and let’s get chugging along before someone (i.e. my internet) breaks up the thing and this all becomes “Cool story, bro!” territory!

BRAINSSSY:

  • “Zombie Bro” started with a scary murder scene involving a school mascot. The murder itself wasn’t scary, but Fuzzy Blue (or Captain Whatshisname) definitely was. Much scarier than the Red Devil from Scream Queens in terms of murder mascots. But maybe I’m just not into mascots. Like at all.
  • “He came, he saw, he was stabbed several times with a sharp cylindrical object.”

iZombie - Nearly Nothing

  • Bro Liv seemed like a relative of Stoner Liv and I mean that as a compliment. While not the most challenging character to pull off, Rose McIver seemed to be having a blast doing it and it translated in her perfect perma-grim and gameness to do anything (including, yes, making a a dress out of police tape).
  • We’d all do Tom Hardy and then delete Tom Brady and Tom Cruise, Bro Liv. And it would be a lovely day for us all.
  • Respect to Clive for not putting up with those frat bros talking about the shape of girls’ breasts.
  • Two words: Brain and Fart. Two more: Princess and Sparkles. Two more: High and Ravi.

iZombie - Morgue Make-Up

  • “You know what we need for the house? VELVET.”
  • “Don’t bat those big brown eyes at me! You manipulative bastard!” Major speaks for us all, re: Ravi’s charms. (But seriously, guys, how great is Rahul Kohli every single episode? More Rahul and Ravi, please.)
  • Did anyone else catch these randy skeletons in the background? Defs the work of Bro Liv.

iZombie - Skulls

  • “More milky Tilda Swinton, less Casper’s ass.” Casper’s Ass is the name of my tinted moisturizer. Or it should be.
  • Robert Knepper as Blaine’s dad? Me likely. What do you guys think?
  • Me also likely that a break in the case came from mistaking Dermot Mulroney and Dylan McDermott. Even if that joke is a tad overplayed.

NOT-SO BRAINSSSY:

  • Sad part is, as much as we make fun of them, sexist frat boys like the ones we saw in this episode are totally real. (Remember that recent incident where frat dudes hung super sexist messages up to welcome freshman girls?!)
  • I’m not sure what to make of Addict Major. They really are giving this guy a lot of emotional heft this season, which is great for him, but, once again, I really would like to see weighty twists like this going to Liv. If her only conflict for the moment is going to be whether or not Major wants to speak with her, that’s not cool, right?

iZombie - Major Buzzkill

  • Respect taken away from Clive for that lame Forrest Gump joke, even if it meant Liv got to say “You’re getting chocolate, bro!”
  • “I got your deets from a Jamaican dude at the morgue.” Offensiveness aside, this is not a great joke.
  • Speaking of silliness, do we really believe that a frat dude would wash his nacho dish? I mean, c’mon.
  • This was technically a Halloween episode, but Halloween was not really discussed, which is a true crime in my books. A crime that might be made right by honoring the episode at actual Halloween time. (P.S. – Anyone legit considering this, or any iZombie costumes? Because I am and know I can’t be the only one.)

  • No Peyton again. Even if we know she’s coming back soon, it’s still worth noting her absence.  Especially since we got limited Gilda time and while I love Liv’s interactions with the dudes, I do think it wouldn’t hurt to have an additional strong female presence in there too.
