Jared Leto in full vampire face as Morbius

Is Morbius in the Multiverse?

Fans have been abuzz ever since the early trailer for Morbius (all the way back in 2020!) featured Michael Keaton reprising his role as Adrian Toomes, the Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming. This trailer, coupled with the end credits sequences in both Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Eddie Brock/Venom is transported from his universe into the MCU and back, have left audiences wondering if the Marvel and Sony cinematic universes might finally be blending. And will there be more of this in Morbius?

Things have gotten more confusing as there have now been reports and comments from critics who have seen the film that scenes shown in the trailer have since been cut, and that Michael Keaton’s role as the Vulture has been reduced to an end-of-film cameo. However, in an interview with Cinemablend, director Daniel Espinosa provided some illuminating answers.

Which universe is Morbius in?

Espinosa has revealed that Morbius exists in the same universe as Venom! He said “Morbius lives in the same universe as Venom. This is the universe we saw Venom exit at the end of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and return to at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home.” This means that while Eddie Brock is contending with his alien parasite pal in San Francisco, Dr. Morbius is experimenting with his new vampire powers in NYC. Cinemablend also pressed Espinosa about whether or not this universe has a Spider-Man and which Spider-Man it will be (Holland, Garfield, Maguire, or someone new), and shockingly, he confirmed that it does, and said “It is my understanding that audiences will discover the answer soon.”

He also confirmed that Michael Keaton’s Vulture that appears in Morbius is the same character from Homecoming, and explained how it was possible:

“At the end of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, and in No Way Home itself, it is clearly established that it is possible for characters to transfer from one Multiverse to another. The events of No Way Home had the effect of transferring Venom and Vulture (and maybe others) back and forth between the MCU and the Venom Universe.”

This is particularly exciting because Sony also has Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web films in the works. Which means that these are characters that could have been pulled from the MCU! All in all, it sounds like Morbius is not in the MCU (yet) but he is in the larger multiverse that is now starting to intersect and overlap thanks to the mishandled spell of Doctor Strange and Peter Parker.
