In good news: ‘Sinners’ continues to break box office records

Much to the chagrin of certain outlets (you know the one), Sinners continues to prove its power. Despite some trade publications trying to say that its success wasn’t “enough,” Sinners has now taken the title of  the highest-grossing original film since 2010.

As Pajiba pointed out, this is the first original film of the 2020s to crack into the top films. To be fair, we’ve only really had roughly 2 to 3 years of opportunities for original films in the 2020s and movie theaters were still recovering from the pandemic. But Sinners breaking into the top films is an exciting feat. Especially since there were people, as previously hinted about, who were trying to downplay the film’s success.

The original films of the 2020s have not found box office success in the way that Sinners has. As of this writing, Sinners brought in $275 million on a $90 million budget. That’s a pretty great profit for the Ryan Coogler film. And it helps that it is just a really great movie and one that has gotten audiences excited to talk about movies again.

One of the issues that came with trade publications downplaying the film’s success is that they did not take into account how Sinners was being received by fans. It became a cultural moment on social media. From dancing to “Rocky Road to Dublin” to bits about not letting people into your home, the movie was well received and became a fan favorite overnight. And rightfully so.

There is so much to love about Coogler’s film and hopefully people will see the success of Sinners and know that you can take risks with cinema. Great original movies can find success and when they do, it makes movie fans everywhere happy.

Sinners deserves to break records and I’m grateful that it is. So let’s continue to support the Coogler film and celebrate just how amazing this original film is.
