‘I’m Already Coming for His Spot’: A$AP Rocky Threatens to Destroy NYC Mayor in a Clash No One Saw Coming

Here for it.

A$AP Rocky just threw down the gauntlet at New York City’s mayor Zohran Mamdani, daring him to a rap battle and even threatening to take his job in the next election. The Harlem rapper, born Rakim Mayers, dropped the challenge during a recent interview with Jeff Ihaza from Vibe, making it clear he’s not just talking smack but is serious about stepping into politics.

“Mamdani ain’t f—ing with me,” Rocky said at the 16:20 mark of the video. “Listen, I’m already coming for his spot ’cause I’m about to be Mayor Mayers in like, four years or whatever. So listen, if he want to battle, we could do that. If he want to have a little debate, we could do that too, man,” he added, according to Complex.

The whole thing started as a joke at the Met Gala, where someone asked Rocky if he’d ever battle Mamdani. His reaction? A laugh and a high-five when the person picked him to win. But the idea stuck, and now it’s turning into something real. Mamdani, for his part, isn’t exactly rushing to accept the challenge. His team made it clear he knew he’d lose a rap battle to a veteran like A$AP Rocky.

Mamdani left the door open for a collaboration instead

Deputy Press Secretary Jeremy M. Edwards told Billboard, “Mayor Mamdani is well aware that he would lose a rap battle to Lord Flacko. That said, the Mayor welcomes any opportunity to collaborate with his fellow Knicks fan to make NYC more affordable so every New Yorker can always strive and prosper.”

That last bit is a nod to the A$AP acronym, which stands for ‘Always Strive And Prosper’. It is often used as a prefix in stage names of artists affiliated with the A$AP Mob – a prominent New York City-based rap collective and fashion brand.

It’s not like Mamdani is a stranger to rap, though. Before he took office last November, he was a socially conscious rapper himself, going by the names Young Cardamom and Mr. Cardamom. His music tackled everything from colonialism to naan, and he even called himself a “C-list rapper,” inspired by the now-defunct group Das Racist.

His royalties from music in 2025? A whopping $1,643, up slightly from $1,267 the year before. When reporters asked about it in April, Mamdani joked that constituents should “go to Spotify” if they want to boost his earnings. “A lot of people say they’re listening,” he said. “They’re not listening.”

Mamdani’s political rise has been historic

Last November, Mamdani became New York City’s 112th mayor. He’s NYC’s first Muslim and African-born mayor, as well as the youngest person to hold the office in over a century. He won the race with just over 50% of the vote, and turnout hit over two million – the highest since 1969. But now, he’s got a new kind of competition.

Rocky isn’t just talking about a rap battle; he’s hinting at a real political run. “I’m here to do something, humanitarian work for the city that I’m from,” he told Vibe. “All bulls— aside, I’m really gonna run for mayor. Watch this s—.”

For now, Rocky’s focused on his music. His latest album, Don’t Be Dumb, dropped in January and hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, his first album in eight years. He’s also in the middle of his Don’t Be Dumb World Tour, with stops in Philly and a hometown show at Governors Ball in Queens this weekend.

The idea of a rapper-turned-mayor isn’t new, but Rocky’s confidence is next-level. He’s not just challenging Mamdani to a battle; he’s positioning himself as a serious contender for the mayor’s office. And while Mamdani might not be ready to step into the rap ring, he’s at least open to working with Rocky on bigger issues, like making the city more affordable. That’s a collaboration most New Yorkers could probably get behind.
