‘I am very proud of him’: California Governor Gavin Newsom draws appreciation for standing up against Donald Trump
California Governor Gavin Newsom has been quite vocal about his disdain towards U.S. President Donald Trump, since the latter returned to office this year for a second term. Time and again, both on social media and in the press, Newsom has expressed his dissatisfaction with Trump and his administration’s unlawful practices, which target minorities, promote conspiracy theories, and deny the reality of climate change.
As the U.S. government faces a shutdown following the Republicans and the Democrats’ not being able to reach a consensus about a funding bill, Gavin Newsom is not holding back. He has been repeatedly taking to the social media platform, X (previously Twitter), to tear Trump and his Republican buddies down.
On October 1, 2025, Newsom highlighted in a post on the platform that the last government shutdown had occurred when Donald Trump was president. He also pointed out that the event had cost the American people approximately $11 billion. In another post, shared on the platform on October 2, 2025, he uploaded a meme video in which Trump could be seen mentioning during a previous interview that in the event of a government shutdown, the president would be to blame. Calling Trump out on his double standards, as he continues to blame the opposition for the shutdown, Newsom wrote in the post:
“Call it the Trump Effect.”
More recently, he asked people on the platform to notice the pattern in government shutdowns caused in recent times, noting that Donald Trump had caused three of them.
While Gavin Newsom continues to blast Trump and his government, his stance has earned him appreciation from many who value his commitment to these issues. A user on X appreciated his perseverance in the face of adversity and wrote:
“I am very proud of him. Love him or hate him you have to admit he’s fighting the Trump administration’s excesses with courage. He defends the U.S. Constitution like a true patriot. He is our role model today.”
Another user wrote:
“Only one so far to step up to the plate. We need someone to speak for us. To defend us. We’ll speak with our vote when the times comes.”
