Homeland Security agents spend hours searching Ilhan Omar’s home for alleged immigration fraud. Now the congresswoman says she is forced to move
Threat to safety.

Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar says she will have to leave her Washington, D.C. home following a high-profile search of the property by federal agents. According to Reality Tea, the congresswoman confirmed her plans to relocate in a recent interview with Chris Hayes of MS NOW. She cited significant safety concerns after her private address became public knowledge.
Omar stated that she has received death threats since the incident occurred. She expressed deep worry regarding the safety of her children when they visit the residence.
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents arrived at the Congresswoman’s home on October 12. They executed a judicially authorized search warrant as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. This federal probe reportedly examines potential false statements or fraud regarding immigration paperwork. The investigation is said to involve Omar and members of her family. Officials have not announced any formal charges against Omar at this time.
The search lasted for around five hours
Omar recalled waking up at around 6 a.m. to the sound of agents pounding on her doors. She was home with her husband and 20-year-old son during the event. Omar initially believed the commotion involved her neighbors. She had only been asleep for a few hours after a late night. “It sounded like an urgent evacuation sort of situation,” she said.
“I think I went to bed at like 3, 3:30, and so it was, you know, trying to figure out if you’re dreaming this weird thing that’s happening. But they basically surrounded the house,” she added. “They were pounding on the back door and the front door, and, you know, we were screaming that we were coming down. Our bedroom’s upstairs. We were trying to put on clothes and, you know, trying to run down before they broke the door,” she continued.
The agents reportedly seized 17 items during the search. This list included phones and several personal notebooks. They also took a Somali-language children’s book from the house. A vintage camera belonging to her husband was also collected by the team. Omar described the agents as “intrusive but polite” during the process. She noted that they logged the items and replaced everything else in its place.
Omar denies any wrongdoing regarding these allegations
She maintains that she is confident she did nothing illegal. The congresswoman arrived in the United States as a child at age 12 after her family obtained asylum. She became a citizen five years later in 2000. “It would be a huge undertaking to, I suppose, indict a 12-year-old for so cleverly conspiring to defraud immigration services to come to the United States. I’m sure there are a lot of smart 12-year-olds, but that seems like a leap,” she said.
According to Al Jazeera, reports suggest that potential future charges might include conspiracy or making false statements. Omar has publicly accused the administration of using the investigation for political intimidation. She has frequently clashed with President Donald Trump throughout her career. Trump has criticized the congresswoman on several occasions. Earlier this week, he called her “sick” and “dishonest” while commenting on her birthplace.
Omar has also dealt with conspiracy theories regarding her immigration status for many years. Some individuals have alleged that she married her brother. Omar has repeatedly dismissed these claims as “disgusting lies.” Hayes questioned her about this during the interview.
He asked about the long-running allegation that Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, her former husband, to help him obtain a green card. Omar called the claim “insane,” saying it began with a Somali blog and was later amplified by right-wing conspiracy theorists in Minneapolis. Hayes then asked: “You’re not related to him at all?” Omar initially answered, “Not that.” Hayes followed up with, “There’s not a weird kernel of truth?” Omar replied, “Not to my knowledge.
Many congressional Democrats have condemned the search
They have also raised questions about the timing of the operation. The Department of Justice typically avoids overt investigative actions against candidates near an election. This search occurred weeks before the November 3 midterm elections. Omar, 44, is currently running for re-election in a district in Minneapolis. She is expected to hold onto her seat despite the ongoing controversy.
The investigation remains active and moving forward. Federal officials are still reviewing the evidence gathered during the October 12 search. Omar continues to insist on her innocence while the legal process plays out. Her decision to leave her home marks a significant change in her personal life. The situation highlights the intense pressure often placed on public figures during federal inquiries.
For now, Omar expects to continue her duties while managing the fallout from this event. She remains a prominent figure in the current political climate. Her plan to move to a new home is a direct response to the safety threats she has faced recently. It is a choice that reflects her current reality.
