Woman meets Hinge date for dinner. Then she ends up leaving before the food is even served: ‘I wouldn’t Venmo him anything’

Dating on Hinge can go one of two ways: great, or a complete disaster. For TikToker @itsmelo, it was the latter—and she took to the short-form video app to vent her frustration.
Eating her takeout chicken fingers and fries, @itsmelo told the story of her date. It went off to a bad start, with the man being half an hour late as she waited in the restaurant. Despite taking 20 minutes to even respond to her text, she decided to still give him a fair shake — but things ended up being a “huge disappointment.”
She recounted how she asked him “typical first date questions” about his work and family, but this man didn’t just give short answers; he also failed to ask any questions back. The TikToker said it was apparent that he “just doesn’t care about getting to know me at all.”
In turn, she was upfront: telling the date that they “don’t really vibe.” She thanked him for the date and Venmoed him half the price of the dinner, and left before the dishes even arrived.
“Honestly, at this rate, I don’t know where to meet people,” @itsmelo admitted. Dating apps don’t work. Organically don’t work. I don’t know what to do.”
She also pointed out the irony of the man putting that he was looking for a long-term relationship on his profile but not making any kind of effort.
“If you don’t vibe just tell me straight,” she concluded. “Straight up, I’m not gonna get offended or anything. “
The video clip amassed 75,600 views, while the TikToker didn’t immediately respond to The Mary Sue’s request for comment via TikTok comment or email.

What did commenters think?
In the comments, several users seemed to think that the TikToker didn’t go far enough. “If he’s late after 15 mins I would just leave b/c he doesn’t value you or your time,” one wrote. “Sry sis, next time don’t Venmo,” a second concurred. “Let’s normalize leaving at the 15 min mark if they’re late.” And a third admitted: “I wouldn’t Venmo him anything.”
A fourth commenter praised @itsmelo for how they handled it, saying: “What’s awesome is the way you handled it. The date sucked, true, but you were calm, cool, confident.”
While a fifth despaired: “I’ve deleted all the apps. there’s no point anymore.”
Los Angeles woman leaves a Hinge date after 15 minutes
User @itsmelo isn’t the first TikToker to share the details of their abrupt departure from a Hinge date. LA-based TikToker Mia (@morelikemii) went viral after leaving her farmer’s market Hinge date after just 15 minutes.
Like @itsmelo’s date, Mia’s date was 30 minutes late, with the TikToker admitting that, to her, it was an “ick.”
Another similarity was that, while she tried to engage the date in conversation, he wasn’t giving her much to work with. “It was like five or 10 minutes of that… just giving me no personality,” she said.
However, when she shared that she was a professional dancer among other things, he asked her if she was like a “stripper.”
This, for her, was the final straw. After sharing some choice words with the date, she walked away.
Given that these two experiences are so similar, it’s impossible not to notice that Hinge is the common denominator here, suggesting that this app might not be as great as it used to be.
