Her bank asked her if she meant to leave a 266% tip; when she confronted the Atlanta restaurant owner, she claimed they lied
An Atlanta woman has claimed she was contacted by her bank asking if she meant to leave a 266% tip at a restaurant she said she only got takeout from. While she didn’t spend too much on the food in the first place, the unexpected tip amount was a cause for concern, so the woman decided to head back to the restaurant and find out what happened.
Adrienne said she was contacted by Capital One via email, asking her about a tip worth 266% of the meal she’d paid for. The email from her bank showed her order, which was worth $15.01, accompanied by a $40 tip, which brought the total for her order up to $55.01.
Adrienne said she immediately got dressed and headed to the Nuevo Laredo in Atlanta. She then showed the bank email to a female server, telling her that she had ordered soup to go, which is why she knew she hadn’t left a tip. She questioned how the “X” on her receipt had turned into $40 and had the server bring up the receipt for the order. Adrienne claimed that she heard her saying to herself, “Lindsay, Lindsay, Lindsay.”
The bizarre comment made Adrienne question what the server knew that she didn’t. Things only got stranger when she spoke to the restaurant owner over the phone.
The owner claimed it was just a mistake
According to Adrienne, the owner tried to pass it off as a mistake, claiming that the server had likely just misread the amount in the tip section. While she said the owner gave her a full refund for the tip, she said, “Where he lost me was that he said, ‘This was just an accident.’”
When she questioned his assertion that it was an accident she claimed he tried to explain it away, saying a similar thing had happened to him in the past. However, Adrienne insisted she had put an “X” in the tip space, so there shouldn’t have been any possibility of the number being misread or mixed up. “There’s no way that you can accidentally rerun my card for $40 when I didn’t intend to leave anything,” she said.
Adrienne also questioned the other server, asking her, “Was that not scratched out on my receipt copy?” She claimed that the server “didn’t want to say yes, but she didn’t say no.” She claimed that she could tell by the server’s initial response that Lindsay had changed the tip amount, and she implied that the owner was covering it up.
Commenters questioned whether Lindsay and the owner were family, which may have explained the alleged cover-up. Others said that adding an unauthorized tip was illegal and that Adrienne should have called the police. Some also advised putting a zero with a line through it in the tip space in future, to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
