Helena Bonham Carter Has Checked Out of the White Lotus Before She Even Settled In

Drama, intrigue, and a tornado’s worth of rumors swirling around: White Lotus season four has all the hallmarks of an HBO classic, and it hasn’t even been shot yet.
The critically acclaimed murder mystery anthology series has been forced into a major casting change just over a week into filming on the French Riviera, with celebrated actress Helena Bonham Carter departing the set. As per Deadline, A HBO spokesperson confirmed the blue-blooded actress left the show as the “character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.”
They added that the role had been rethought and was being rewritten with a view to being recast, and that White and his fellow producers are “saddened that they won’t get to work with her [Bonham Carter], but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”
This is all quite plausible: as noted in the Deadline article and in other sources, White is meticulous about how he wants his vision enacted. He writes and directs each episode, and as per on set sources, he felt that things weren’t working after shooting a few scenes, so decided to cut his losses early.
Rumors have of course abounded. White’s desire for control is seen by many as a driving factor in the show’s acclaim, but others have found him difficult to work with. Bonham Carter is no stranger to controversial views too, so it follows egos may have gotten out of check and they could have had a spat. This would also be the second recasting in two seasons, with Charlotte Le Bon taking the place of Francesca Corney last season.
The Daily Mail has gone a different route, reporting that the BAFTA winner had a problem with co-star Sandra Bernhard. Although we might never know the real reason behind the departure, we can be sure millions will tune into season 4.
