Gwendoline Christie Confirms Captain Phasma Will Be Back in Star Wars: Episode VIII

Which is now forever away.

Like a lot of things about The Force Awakens, we were all excited to see Gwendoline Christie in action as Captain Phasma in the movie, but her part turned out to be painfully small. That’s due to several factors, including the movie being mostly set up for a trilogy, but that’s actually the silver lining as Christie has confirmed she’ll return in future installments.

We’d already heard rumblings that this would be the case, but that was before the movie came out—a faraway, mythical time we can hardly remember. BTFA, if you will. Phasma’s fate seemed a bit uncertain at the end of the movie for reasons it’s hard to even call spoilers at this point, since box office numbers indicate you’ve all seen it several times.

Anyway, at the Screen Actors Guild Awards over the weekend, Christie confirmed we hadn’t seen the last of her stormtrooper on-screen. The interview also features some remarks about using her accessories as weapons if she has to and obvious exhaustion with interviewer jokes, and it’s worth a watch just for that:

So there you have it. Hopefully, now that the character has outgrown just being someone to fill that awesome chrome armor that Kylo Ren was too emo-Vader to wear, we’ll see Phasma get more to do in Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII.
