Gunpowder Milkshake’s Action-Packed, Kick-Ass Trailer Is Here!

Punch me, Karen Gillan.

The trailer for Gunpowder Milkshake is here and looks like the perfect mother/daughter badass film! Starring Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, and Carla Gugino, the movie is STACKED! And a wonderful look at how you can have an action movie with a strong team of women and not have it feel like it’s pandering to the “girl power” narrative movies have started to cling to. Not that there’s a problem with showing “girl power.” It just comes off as cheesy most of the time, and this trailer never has that moment. It’s just a group of women kicking ass.

Plus, as a fan of Gillan’s since her work on Doctor Who, seeing her in this action role feels so good. She has the energy of Ryan Gosling in this, and I am obsessed!

The Firm is a group that is, seemingly, led by Paul Giamatti and protects this group of female assassins—that is, until Sam (Karen Gillan) kills someone she shouldn’t, and the firm can no longer protect her. She does so to protect an 8-year-old and also, in her roundabout way, make her mother, Scarlet (Lena Headey), proud.

The synopsis for the film, according to Collider, is as follows:

“Sam was only 12 years old when her mother Scarlet, an elite assassin, was forced to abandon her. Sam was raised by The Firm, the ruthless crime syndicate her mother worked for. Now, 15 years later, Sam has followed in her mother’s footsteps and grown into a fierce hit-woman. But when a high-risk job goes wrong, Sam must choose between serving The Firm and protecting the life of an innocent 8-year-old girl – Emily. With a target on her back, Sam has only one chance to survive: Reunite with her mother and her lethal associates, The Librarians. These three generations of women must now learn to trust each other, stand up to The Firm and their army of henchmen, and raise hell against those who could take everything from them.”

At its core, the trailer is about acceptance. A daughter wants to find her mother and make her proud. A group of women aim to accept each other and work together to protect one another. And honestly, it’s beautiful to see. With few exceptions, most of the female-led action movies we see have the women at odds with each other, or a man thrown into the fight. But seeing Yeoh, Bassett, Headey, Gillan, and Gugino all together made me want to cheer.

To be honest, trailers like this make me feel like I can go out and high kick someone and take them down. It’s the joke that this must be how men felt for all those years watching action movies, but it’s the truth! For so long, we’ve had our few and far between female action stars, and we were essentially told that it was good enough, but having a movie like this with all women working together and being absolute badasses while protecting a kid? It made me feel invincible in the best possible way.

I can’t wait to watch Gunpowder Milkshake because it’s a movie filled with actresses I admire, amazing action sequences, and Karen Gillan taking out like five dudes in the trailer ALONE. What’s not to be excited about?!!
