Rocket Raccoon and Baby Groot

Marvel’s New Teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Shows Us Rocket and Groot’s Goofy Father-Son Dynamic

"Showtime, a-holes."

Marvel’s calling this new video spot for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 a “teaser,” but there’s so much new info packed into it that I’d call it a “trailer.” It’s super short, but we get to see lots more character interactions, and tons of new jokes. We also meet a new lady alien at the end of the trailer, who embarrasses Star-Lord in front of everyone.

Mostly, though, the teaser focuses on Baby Groot, the new addition to the team. Believe it or not, that’s still Vin Diesel’s voice acting as Baby Groot, or so he claims… it sure doesn’t sound like him! We’ve got a brand new dynamic between this young reincarnation of Groot and Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper). The latter is taking on a “father figure” role that he’s clearly not cut out to do. But hey, at least Rocket is no longer the shortest member of the team… nor does he have to deal with being “the cute one” anymore, which wasn’t an identity that he wanted, so getting usurped in that department by Baby Groot seems just fine.

I have no idea how quickly Baby Groot will be growing up, but for the moment, it looks like we’re going to be in for a lot of mistakes as the young hero learns the ropes. Based on the brief fight scenes in this teaser, though, it also looks like Baby Groot can hold his own in combat. He’s adorable and tough, just like his pal/babysitter Rocket Raccoon. Awww.
