One of two things was bound to happen: either Apple was going to fix its terrible Maps app, or Google was going to do it for them. Today, it looks like it’s going to be the latter. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is getting ready to submit a new Google Maps app to the iTunes Store. iPhone users the world over can begin rejoicing…not now, but pretty soon.

There’s no question the the new Apple Maps app is bad. Even Apple says it’s bad. So we’re surprised it’s taken this long for the realistic possibility of Google Maps returning to the iPhone to happen. There is no definite timeframe set, but Google has been testing an app to run on iOS outside the company, so development must be pretty far along.

Of course there’s no guarantee that Apple will actually approve the new app, given its history of rejecting apps for questionable reasons. Considering more or less everyone with an iPhone and places to be would certainly like to see this happen, though, it’s probably more a matter of “when” than “if” — especially when today’s news is taken into consideration.
