Reboots are getting out of hand, but something about rebooting Flatliners, a 1990s sci-fi film where medical students learn how to resuscitate themselves at the cost of being haunted by the past, feels so meta that I can’t really knock it. Bring together Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, and Kiersey Clemons as the gang of modern-day Frankensteins? I’m all in.

The original cast included Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, and Keifer Sutherland, who will also appear in the film. Directing is Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (the Swedish version)’s Niels Arden Oplev.

Here’s the synopsis, which pretty much follows the original:

“…medical students who, obsessed by the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment: stopping their hearts for short periods of time. Each triggers a near-death experience, giving them a firsthand account of the afterlife. But as their experiments become increasingly dangerous, they are haunted by the sins of their past, brought on by the paranormal consequences of trespassing to the other side.”

Flatliner hits theaters Sept. 29, and it’s sure to be heart-stopping (make your heart skip a beat, cross some lines, heart-wrenching, etc.). Are you looking forward to it? Or is it more of a bypass? (I’m not sorry.)
