Chris Martin and Jimmy Fallon Pay Tribute to David Bowie, Singing “Life on Mars?” Together

Just when you thought the Bowie tributes were over and done with, here’s Jimmy Fallon with his own tribute to the late great martian. The video features an uncharacteristically serious Fallon singing “Life on Mars?” accompanied by an equally serious Chris Martin on piano. Unlike other videos on Fallon’s Tonight Show YouTube channel, this one is pretty stark and–like I said–serious. It’s clear that Fallon and Martin are both trying to pay their own tribute to the late artist.

You might also remember when Martin was on the Late Late Show early last month and sang “Heroes” with James Corden during his Carpool Karaoke segment. As well, Martin was once pretty harshly rejected by Bowie after he proposed a collaboration with him. A bit painful, but that doesn’t seem to have changed how much Martin idolized the legend.

This video in particular is quite touching at points, even though there are a few moments when you might expect Fallon to break out into a joke.

I’m going to be honest, though: Lorde’s tribute at the BRITs was the peak of Bowie tributes. That’s not to say other tributes aren’t good–no, not at all. It’s just that Lorde’s was really out of this world, just like Bowie himself.

What did you think of Fallon and Martin’s tribute here? Also, are you going to listen to Bowie all day now? Because I am.
