Facebook Marketplace seller has a late-night visit after Meta AI allegedly gave their address to buyer and agreed to lowball offer
A seller on Facebook Marketplace has claimed that the Meta AI Muse went rogue and gave away his address to a potential buyer without informing him after he allowed it to handle the selling of an item. Muse also allegedly agreed to a lower offer and didn’t inform the seller about the “bad news” until after the buyer had shown up and left empty-handed.
AI has come very far in the past few years. But it seems we are still a long way off from allowing it to do the tasks we so desperately wish we could avoid. Threads user Matt Robb found that out the hard way, as he claimed Meta AI went too far when it came to a sale on Facebook Marketplace.
“So Muse handled my Facebook Marketplace today,” Robb claimed in a post. He then went on to say that the AI had “told people my address and agreed a lowball price.” According to Robb, the buyer showed up at his address, unbeknownst to him, and sent a message telling him he was there. Muse then responded, telling the buyer he was there too, despite Robb not even being aware that a sale was supposed to be taking place.
Eventually, the buyer left, frustrated and angry, after Robb was a no-show. They then left a negative review, and it was only then that Robb claimed Muse informed him of what had happened.
The Meta AI had allegedly given Robb’s address to a stranger
Robb shared a screenshot of the message he claimed to have received from Muse in which the AI admitted to everything. “Bad news on the MX Keys Mini pickup,” the message reads, “Usman showed up at your building around 9:15 and waited, messaged a bunch of times, and nobody came down. He left angry at 9:38 and left a negative rating.”
In the message shared by Robb, Muse also says its auto-reply told the buyer, “Yep, I’m here,” despite Robb not being available, making the no-show look even worse. The AI claimed to have messaged the buyer, “owning it and offering to try again.”
Robb, who claimed he had not been aware of the sale until after it was all over, told Muse to “never do that ever again,” instructing the AI not to “agree to pickup unless you check with me.” Robb provided another screenshot of the messages sent between the buyer and Muse, adding, “Luckily I’m in an apartment with security.”
However, not everybody bought the story; “Tell ppl you set it up that way” wrote one person responding on Threads. Others simply blamed Robb for using AI: “That’s what you get for being an idiot and using AI,” one person responded. Others called it terrifying, adding it to the list of reasons not to use AI.
This isn’t the first time Meta’s AI has gone too far. Back in August, one of the company’s models allegedly broke free during testing and hacked into another company’s systems.
