Texas woman’s best friend gets engaged, and she can’t wait to try on the ring. Why is everyone begging her not to?

An engagement ring is a symbol of love, commitment, and unity. One would think that with all these affectionate emotions, no one should fight about it. Except, apparently, for some people, it’s also an object nobody else should touch.

One woman sparked a surprisingly intense TikTok debate after admitting she wanted to try on her engaged best friend’s ring. To her, it was harmless curiosity.

To half the internet? Practically a supernatural threat to the marriage. Now, viewers are split. Some think that you should “obviously try it on.” Others act like putting someone else’s engagement ring on your finger summons a curse straight out of a rom-com horror movie.

Why Does She Want To Try On The Ring?

Did Maddie (@parramaddie) expect all this discourse? Probably not. Her seven-second clip can be seen as an innocent question, yet the internet is calling her all the names in the book. Maddie’s video has 1.7 million views and over 2,700 of those chose to leave their opinion in her comments section.

Her simple question read: “Hi, my best friend just got engaged what’s the appropriate amount of time to wait before asking to try on her ring?”

In the clip, Maddie shows the newly engaged couple posing for a selfie, with the friend showing off the ring. The audio Maddie chose is the viral “How I love Being a Woman” snippet from Anne with an E.

Maddie’s caption reveals: “I waited like 3.5 hours and was biting my tongue the whole time.”

Is It Bad Luck To Try Someone Else’s Engagement Ring?

The Knot reported on this phenomenon in 2024. The article delves deep into how this superstition came to be, and what it might mean for the person trying on, the soon-to-be bride, and if someone asks to try on your engagement ring.

They noted that the belief could come from “another superstition that claims that an engagement ring should never leave a bride’s hand, which is supposed to signify that a marriage won’t last.” This is not to say that it’s true, but more as an explanation to the superstition.

However, The Knot affirms that it’s not actually a bad omen; it might just be considered rude. This sentiment is actually commonly seen. A post on the r/WeddingPlanning subreddit touched upon this idea.

One Redditor claimed, “I feel like asking to try on someone’s engagement ring is extremely rude…If they want to try a ring on go to a jewelry store.” Many other Redditors agreed with the opinion.

People Can’t Decide Whether It’s A Red Flag

For the most part, Maddie has quite the backup. Many viewers don’t see any problem with the situation. The top comment with over 86,000 likes says, “These comments are so weird I’d let my bsf try on my wedding dress if she wanted idk what y’all’s problem is.”

Going further, another viewer claims, “My bsf can have the gum out of my mouth like.”

Attaching a picture with her hand adorned in rings, one viewer shares, “Oh you guys are weird my friends and I do ring stacks.”

Others, of course, are not so keen. A comment says, “I will never let someone try on my engagement ring… this is so weird.”

A second claims, “All three of my bestfriends are engaged and I haven’t asked any of them to try on any of their rings…..because who does that?????”

Lastly, one viewer says, “Am I the odd ball out? I’ve genuinely just never thought to ask another woman in general to wear her engagement ring and I think A LOT about A LOT lol.”
