"Women share this planet 50/50 and they are under-represented, their potential astonishingly untapped."

In her capacity as UN Goodwill Ambassador, Emma Watson spoke in support of the HeForShe campaign this morning at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

In addition to noting the positive reception HeForShe has received among world leaders, Watson also introduced the year-long IMPACT 10X10X10 initiative calling on governments, companies and universities to help bridge the global gender gap:

It is my belief that there is a greater understanding than ever that women need to be equal participants in our homes, in our societies, in our governments, and in our work places. They know that the world is being held back in every way, because they are not. Women share this planet 50/50 and they are under-represented, their potential astonishingly untapped.

Watson also called on members of the global community whose strength in standing up to systemic oppression might lie more in their words than in their wallets, asking “Writers: have you challenged the language and imagery used to portray women in the media?”
