When Does ‘Derry Girls’ Season 3 Release on Netflix?

The girls are back!

The cast of 'Derry Girls' strike a funny pose for season 3

It’s been nearly 3 years since we last saw the Derry Girls, but thank Sister Michael, the gang returns for their third and final season this year. Derry Girls follows the misadventures of schoolmates Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland), Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), and James (Dylan Llewellyn), the group’s token boy and solo Englishman, in Derry, Ireland during the 1990s during the final years of the Troubles.

The girls encounter crushes, secrets, and all sorts of high school and family drama in the whip-smart comedy series that has earned a cult following across the globe. After a long hiatus, the series returned with its first new trailer last month. The critically acclaimed Irish series from Lisa McGee has already premiered across the pond on Channel 4, featuring a special cameo by Liam Neeson as a police captain questioning the crew.

Okay, but when does season 3 hit Netflix?

Unfortunately for American fans, Derry Girls season 3 doesn’t yet have a release date. Previously, the series would air all its episodes on the U.K.’s Channel 4 before hitting the streamer, which means we could be seeing season 3 as early as this summer. In the meantime, you can rewatch seasons 1 and 2 in preparation for the final 6 episodes.

To be honest, I’m not ready for Derry Girls to be over. Few shows have captured the heightened emotions, the hilarity, and the panic of being a teenage girl like this series. Add in terrific, authentic performances by its talented cast and plenty of ’90s nostalgia, and you have one of the best teen comedies in recent years. I’m excited to watch season 3 but sad to see this magical series come to a close.
