In her two-part storytime that got over 730,000 views, TikTok creator Kayla Kuncheff (@kaylakuncheff) describes the frustrating 4-day long date, during which she felt anxious and stuck.

What Happened During the First Date Trip With the Influencer?

Kuncheff says she first met the influencer during a weekend in Las Vegas, where she and a friend were attending a private concert weekend for an A-list celebrity. During the trip, they met the man and his crew and ended up spending the weekend with them.

“They were so fun, we had a great time,” she recalls. “There were honestly no complaints about the weekend.”

Afterward, Kuncheff and the influencer kept in touch and eventually planned a four-day trip for her to visit him in Los Angeles. She says she was excited because they had hit it off in Vegas, but the energy was off from the start.

When she landed after flying cross-country, he told her to order an Uber because he still had work to finish. Kuncheff says she brushed it off at the time, but definitely noted it.

She says the influencer kept making little comments that bothered her. “You know the type of people who when you say something you feel like they’re immediately judging you,” she says. “This is how I felt the entire time I was there.”

The next day, the two went on a hike. By late afternoon, Kuncheff says she was hungry, hot, and expecting that he might have packed food for both of them, especially after seeing him grab items from the fridge before they left.

Instead, when they sat down near the beach, she says the influencer pulled out bags of meat for himself.

“He pulls out bags of ground meat, chicken protein, and just starts eating them,” she says. “Just food for him and just meat. Didn’t even say anything to me. Didn’t look at me. Wasn’t phased. Just started eating his meat.”

The Equinox Trip That Made Things Worse

The following morning, Kuncheff says the influencer told her he needed to go to the gym. He was planning to go to Equinox, and she agreed to come along, thinking she could walk on the treadmill while he worked out.

But once they arrived, she says he told her he was heading upstairs with a friend to do a “quick workout.” Kuncheff says she was left alone in a huge gym she had never been to before.

An hour and a half went by without any word from him.

“I’m like, ‘Did he leave me here?” she says. “Where is he at and what is he doing?”

Eventually, she says she walked around the gym and found him upstairs in a corner with his friend.

“It was so weird,” she says. “Literally, a two-hour workout where he just left me by myself in a gym I’ve never been in… to go get a quick pump with his buddy.”

At that point, Kuncheff says she was no longer enjoying the trip and wanted to leave.

After the gym, she asked if they could stop at Erewhon so she could try the Hailey Bieber smoothie, which had been popular at the time. She says he judged her for wanting to buy it.

“He looked at me and goes, ‘You really wanna spend $20 on a smoothie?’” she recalls. “First of all, you are paying over $300 a month for a gym, and you’re looking at me crazy because I wanna buy a $20 smoothie.”

She Called a Friend to Come Get Her

By then, Kuncheff says she felt like she was dealing with a completely different person than the one she had met in Las Vegas.

“It was almost like he had an alter ego,” she says. “So different than the weekend that I met him, polar opposite. I’m like, who is this guy that I’m staying with?”

Kuncheff says she still had one or two more days planned with him, but she decided she could not stay. She texted a friend who lived about two hours away in California and asked her to come pick her up.

“You need to come pick me up,” she says she told her friend. “Like, I’m about to have a panic attack. I’m super uncomfortable. He’s made so many weird comments to me.”

Before her friend arrived, Kuncheff says she tried to explain to the influencer that her anxiety was bad and that she needed her friend to pick her up early. She says she told him it had nothing to do with him, even though, in reality, it did.

His response, she says, was not comforting. “This guy goes into a speech about how I need to learn how to cope with my anxiety,” she says. “And I remember him saying something like, ‘How are you ever gonna get through life if you don’t know how to deal with this?’”

Kuncheff says she felt judged and just wanted to get out of the situation. But before her friend arrived, they went to dinner. On the way, she made another casual comment about a beautiful house, and he replied, “I bet you wish you could afford that, don’t you?”

It Doesn’t End There

At dinner, Kuncheff says he ordered his own meal, walked away, and left her to pay for hers. While she says she does not expect a man to pay for everything, she felt the dynamic was different because she had flown across the country to visit him and was staying as his guest.

Finally, her friend arrived. Kuncheff says the man put her luggage in the trunk and gave her a cold goodbye.

“I felt immediate relief that I was in the car with my friend,” she says. “I felt safe again, I felt comfortable again.”

The story still wasn’t over. As Kuncheff and her friend drove away, she says she got a text from him. She initially thought he might apologize for the way the weekend went.

Instead, she says he appeared to accidentally text her a message meant for someone else.

“It says ‘She just left. I’ve never met such a needy girl in my life,” Kuncheff says.

She concludes, saying she learned a valuable lesson.

“Moral of the story is, don’t fly across country for a man that you barely know,” she says. “Make sure the first time you meet him, he introduces himself and his alter ego. And if a guy starts eating meat out of a sandwich bag on your date, run for the hills.”

Commenters Share Their Thoughts and Advice

“Why would you stay there?” asked one user. “Hotel always!”

“Disrespectful from the start,” said another.

“Why did he only take you on walks?” asked a third.

“Walks, hikes & gym,” Kuncheff responded. “Maybe he was trying to tell me something.”

Should You Fly For A First Date?

Traveling long distances to have a first date with someone isn’t unheard of. With how popular dating apps are, you can meet someone from across the country or even the world.

In Kuncheff’s case, another motivating factor was that she had already met the influencer, which also provided a layer of security.

However, being in a situation where you’re isolated with someone you don’t know very well isn’t considered the safest move to make. Experts recommend meeting on a first date in a public place, where you can easily remove yourself from the situation if you so desire.

In a Reddit post where a user flying an hour to meet a first date asked for tips and encouragement, commenters didn’t think it was a good idea, but shared some valuable advice.

“Book your own hotel, if you choose to stay overnight at his place you might be out some cash,” one wrote. “But if the worst happens at least you’ll have a place to stay.”
