Man Visits CVS and Finds Products Sealed Behind Plexiglass Like Jewelry. And the Internet Is Clueless: ‘ It’s So Overstimulating’

A trip to CVS for a bag of chocolate-covered pretzels turned into an unexpected debate about retail security after one TikTok creator showed off a new anti-theft display that left viewers more confused than convinced.

TikTok creator @thecheckoutchad shared a video from inside a CVS store showing a bag of Hershey’s chocolate-dipped pretzels sitting behind a clear plastic security flap. Instead of grabbing the snack off the shelf, shoppers have to lift a hinged plastic cover labeled “Lift Here for Product.”

The unusual part isn’t the barrier. Every second the flap stays open, it continuously plays loud doorbell-like chimes, creating an awkward soundtrack for anyone simply trying to browse.

The creator added the on-screen caption: “CVS employee said so it’s come to this.”

The Noisy Security Display Quickly Caught People’s Attention

The short clip quickly racked up views as commenters questioned why an inexpensive snack needed such an elaborate security system. Many couldn’t understand what the alarm actually accomplishes since shoppers can still remove the item without waiting for an employee.

“Genuinely what even is the point,” one commenter asked.

Another wrote: “I don’t understand the point of these, oh my god someone is buying something from the store, the horror.”

Others wondered why companies invest in increasingly noticeable anti-theft measures instead of improving employee pay.

“Companies really out here spending all sorts of money on anything but better wages,” one viewer commented.

Viewers Joked About the “Alarm of Shame”

The repeated chime became the biggest talking point in the comments, with many describing it as unnecessarily embarrassing for anyone trying to shop.

One user joked: “What’s with the sound of SHAME when you lift it the fourth time?!”

Another summed up the experience by writing: “why does it get mad LMAO.”

Several viewers nicknamed it the “big back alarm,” while others imagined how awkward it would feel to trigger the noise multiple times while comparing products or reading ingredient labels.

One commenter wrote: “Me on my period & overstimulated who just wanted chocolate pretzels but now all of cvs is staring at me.”

Another added: “I have allergies so I need to read the ingredients on every package, joke’s on them.”

Many Said the Constant Sounds Make CVS Stressful to Shop in

The video also sparked a wider conversation about the growing number of motion sensors, locked cases, and audio alerts appearing in some CVS locations. One commenter claimed the alarms have made their local store nearly impossible to shop in.

“There’s a CVS near my house that I cannot go to because it’s so overstimulating,” they wrote. “On a single cosmetics aisle there are probably 3 or 4 motion sensor alarms that beep continuously every time someone walks by… it’s incredibly annoying and I refuse to go there.”

Another shared a similar experience.

“Does your CVS makeup section say ‘hello’ whenever you’re in the aisle?? I thought I was going insane but it’s genuinely an audio loop that plays whenever someone’s in the aisle now.”

Others said they would simply shop somewhere else rather than deal with the extra inconvenience.

“I refuse to shop at CVS for this and their locked shelves. Too inconvenient when there are other stores that sell the same things without overdoing pointless security,” one person wrote.

Still, a few viewers preferred this setup over completely locked display cases that require employees to unlock products.

“I like this better than the ones Walmart has you have to ask someone to open it,” one commenter said.

Whether people found the security measure amusing or frustrating, most agreed on one thing: a bag of chocolate-covered pretzels probably wasn’t the product they expected to feel like it was sitting behind museum glass.
