According to one mom on TikTok, if she hadn’t chosen to break apart a muffin she got at Costco before giving it to her son, the consequences could’ve been severe.

In a TikTok video that got over 387,500 views, content creator Kris (@kristhearies) films a broken-apart chocolate muffin, saying she found something concerning inside.

What Was Allegedly Inside This Costco Muffin?

“Tb when a Costco muffin could have sent my son to the emergency room,” Kris wrote in the video’s text overlay.

In the clip, she explains that she had started breaking the chocolate muffin into smaller pieces before giving it to her son. Then, something sharp poked her.

“OK, so I’m breaking the chocolate muffin apart for my son, and this poked me,” she says.

She then holds the object up to the camera.

“Look at this,” Kris says. “That is a piece of wood in the muffin. Look at that sharp piece of wood.”

The object appears to be a sizable splinter-like piece of wood with a pointed end. After washing it off, Kris notices another detail.

“Look, it even has blue paint on it,” she says. “This is wood.”

At that point, she starts thinking about what could have happened if she hadn’t broken the muffin apart first.

“What if I just, like, given that to him to eat?” she asks.

She also says her daughter had already eaten part of the same muffin before leaving the rest behind.

“My daughter was eating this and she didn’t finish,” Kris says.

Meanwhile, she had been pulling pieces off the muffin and handing them directly to her son.

“Like, I broke up pieces and gave it to him,” she says. “What if he had just put it in his mouth?”

Kris feared the outcome could have been much worse if he had swallowed the sharp object.

“Yeah, he would have died if he swallowed this,” she says. “I’m so disappointed.”

“This was truly terrifying thank god I chose to break it up into small pieces,” she added in the video’s caption.

How Could This Have Happened?

It’s impossible to tell from Kris’ video exactly where the alleged piece of wood came from.

Although that type of contamination isn’t supposed to happen, Kris isn’t the first Costco customer to report finding something that shouldn’t be inside a muffin.

In one post on r/santacruz, a Costco customer said they bit into a muffin and felt something hard.

“Took a bite and felt something hard. Turns out there were small pieces of metal baked right into the muffin,” they wrote. “Not a great start to my week.”

The customer later returned to the Santa Cruz Costco and spoke with a manager. According to their update, they handed over the metal pieces and filled out an incident report.

“She was genuinely concerned about what happened,” the customer wrote of the manager. “I gave them the evidence and filled out an incident report.”

In another r/Costco post, a customer reported finding what they described as a latex glove baked into a Costco muffin. The original post has since been deleted, but the thread and discussion remain online.

Yet another Costco customer also shared photos of several hard, black, plastic-like pieces their mother allegedly encountered while eating one of the bakery’s carrot-cake cupcakes.

Viewers Want To Know What Costco Said

Several commenters wanted to know whether Kris reported what she found.

“Did you take it back to costco? i wonder what they would say. thats wild asf,” one viewer wrote.

Kris responded that she believed she had called the store. “I think I called them and they said they would take the return for money back!” she wrote.

Another commenter had a theory about the blue material on the wood. “That’s from a blue pallet. They will get stuck in bags and boxes all the time. Got to be very careful,” they wrote.

“They taking whole grain to a whole nother level,” a third commenter joked.
