Woman Catches Public Proposal in Chicago. Except It Doesn’t Go at All How She Expected: ‘Yall Better Than Me I Would Have Been Screaming’

A TikTok appeared to capture what looked like a picture-perfect marriage proposal. It has since ignited a fierce debate online after viewers realized the moment wasn’t unfolding the way they expected: the woman was proposing instead.
Taylor Rhae (@Raetaylorrhaebeauty) shared a video with more than 770,500 views. She began documenting after noticing a romantic proposal set up in a field outside the National Public Housing Museum in Chicago. The museum’s colorful murals can be seen in the background as the couple walked toward the display.
Why Was A Woman Proposing To Her Man?
Filming discreetly from her car, Taylor watched as a couple approached an elaborate arrangement of decorations.
Someone inside the car eagerly narrated the scene.
“Did he pop the question?”
For a split second, it appeared as though the man was about to propose.
Instead, the woman suddenly dropped to one knee.
Taylor immediately reacted in disbelief as it became clear she was the one asking the question and not her boyfriend.
The clip ends shortly afterward, leaving viewers to speculate about the couple’s happy moment. Yet, simultaneously launching a heated discussion over the reversal of traditional proposal roles.
One local viewer was simply relieved to finally learn what happened after spotting the setup earlier that day.
“Im glad this was put on my fyp. I had fomo not knowing what happened!! I saw it being set up too,” wrote @diana.
Why Were So Many Viewers Upset?
The overwhelming tone of the comments section centered on disbelief. Many said they would never propose to a man themselves.
Most commenters reacted dramatically to the unexpected twist.
“I would’ve yelled ‘ABSOLUTELY TF NOT’ so loud,” interjected one user.
Another joked that witnessing the proposal would have warranted an intervention.
“I would’ve started honking angrily,” said another.
Others treated the moment like something out of a horror movie.
“Why did you bring me to this horror show,” joked another.
Not everyone understood the backlash. Others said a woman proposing was exactly what equality looks like.
A small number of viewers argued that if both people want to get married, it shouldn’t matter who asks the question.
One commenter summed up that perspective by writing: “This is real equality. Get proposed to king!”
Are Women Proposing Becoming More Common?
While women proposing is becoming more visible, it’s still relatively uncommon. According to a survey by wedding planning platform Zola of more than 1,200 engaged couples, just 2% of heterosexual women said they proposed to their male partner. Other research has estimated the figure to be somewhere between 5% and 16%, depending on the survey.
The gap between attitudes and actions is particularly notable. Although 98% of women surveyed by Zola said they considered themselves equal to their partner, 77% said they never even considered proposing. The most common reasons included social expectations, traditional gender roles, and concerns about hurting their partner’s ego.
In fact, 36% said the man is simply “supposed” to be the one who proposes. By contrast, 93% of men said they would have accepted if their girlfriend had asked.

Why Are More Women Proposing?
Researchers say women proposing is becoming more common as gender norms evolve, women gain greater financial independence, and same-sex couples continue to normalize proposals initiated by either partner. Even so, viral moments like Taylor’s show that traditional expectations remain deeply ingrained. Many viewers still see the man as the person who should get down on one knee.
A 2024 study, which interviewed women who proposed to their male partners, found that many were aware they were challenging a long-standing social norm. The researchers concluded that women proposing is still seen by many as “breaking a taboo in contemporary wedding rituals,” even as attitudes toward gender equality continue to evolve.
Social media platforms like TikTok have also helped normalize nontraditional engagements by exposing millions of viewers to couples who choose to reject long-held gender conventions. Even so, viral reactions like this one show that many people still have strong feelings about who “should” be the one asking the question.
For some viewers, the proposal represented confidence, equality, and a modern approach to marriage. For others, it challenged a tradition they believe should remain unchanged.
The comments ultimately became less about whether the boyfriend said “yes” and more about the expectations people continue to place on one of life’s biggest milestones.
