In a statement posted on Joel’s social media accounts, it was announced that Joel has Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, also known as NPH. The condition, according to the Alzheimer’s Association, is known as “a brain disorder in which excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain’s ventricles.” The statement says that Joel’s recent tour has made the condition harder for Joel to perform.

“Billy Joel has announced that he will be cancelling all scheduled concerts following a recent diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance. Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period,” the statement reads.

But the statement goes on to give fans a hopeful message for Joel’s future as a performer. “Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health. He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.”

Joel himself also provided a statement for fans, apologizing for canceling the tour but also hopeful that his fans understand that this is the best move for him and his well being. “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,” said Joel.

As someone who loves the song “Vienna” very dearly, the news is upsetting but it will hopefully mean that Joel is a back on the stage, selling out Madison Square Garden, sooner rather than later.
