“Batlexander Manilton” is a mouthful, but how else are you going to fit “Batman” into a catalectic trochaic tetrameter? That’s the challenge that the Turtle Cameron team faced when they adapted “Alexander Hamilton,” the very first song in the musical Hamilton, into a song about the Dark Knight of Gotham.
It almost works — but “[pause pause pause pause] Bat [pause] man” might have sounded less awkward than “Batlexander Manilton.” Still, the singing and the verses otherwise sound so excellent that the weirdness of the title gets forgotten (mostly).
As for recognizing all of the characters, I was expecting the lone woman to be Selina Kyle, but I think she’s actually Rachel Dawes? And (spoilers?) Two-Face ends up taking on Burr’s final line in the song, rather than the Joker as I would have expected, which means this fan video is more inspired by Christopher Nolan’s take on the Bat than anything else.
As far as Hamilton parodies go, this might be my favorite one so far. The Star Trek one was pretty good, but I like the theatrical nature of this one better; it’s clear that a lot of love and effort and planning went into this idea, and the performers really sell it, even with a fairly minimalist staging. The costumes are also pretty simple — with the Joker and Batman as the exceptions —Â but the idea itself is already complicated enough that it all works.
I mean … except for “Batlexander Manilton,” which is a creative choice that these folks are clearly not going to be able to live down as this video goes viral!
