The Mary Sue Reviews: The Barbarian Princess Shenanigans of Oni Press’ Princess Ugg

My absolute first impression of Princess Ugg was that it's like a baby Red Sonja, which may be what hooked me because BABY RED SONJA HOW ADORABLE WOULD THAT BE?? But that actually only tells half the story. We may start out introduced to a bonnie wee redheaded berserker, but this is really a tale of two princesses. A brash barbarian princess travels from her home in the frozen north to a sunny and warm "civilized" world for a more formal education, and is paired with the local, more traditionally feminine princess in your typical odd couple scenario:

Shutter starts out with an innocuous enough backstory. Well, it even starts out with me looking at our proto-protagonist Kate Kristopher and thinking "You're wrong, kid. So wrong." I'd kill to be mucking around on the moon for no particular reason. Probably drawing lewd things with moon rocks so they can be seen from Earth. Hey man, no one said I had to be classy while I explored new frontiers, did they?

The Mary Sue (Finally!) Reviews Transformers: Windblade #1

After all the hype and hooplah surrounding its release, does the first issue of Mairghread Scott and Sarah Stone's Windblade (read our interview with Scott here), which gave the franchise a much-needed lady robot infusion, stack up as quality entertainment? Or was all the hand-wringing and fan angst justified? More importantly, will this book make any damn sense to a newcomer like me? I'm new to the Transformers fandom. I mean just-joined-at-thirty-years-old-after-watching-a-cartoon-on-Netflix new. Literally, I can remember this kid in grade school, whose name was Curtis (for reference, I can't remember the name of my own fiancé half the time, so the fact that I remember Curtis is something to behold), whom I used to tease for liking things like Ninja Turtles and Transformers. He had a Ninja Turtle backpack and I had a smug sense of superiority. Completely unjustified, Curtis. I owe you ten beers. TEN BEERS.

The Mary Sue Interview: Moro Rogers On Her Adventure Graphic Novel City in the Desert

“A world without monsters is a dangerous place” In a world where monsters are very real, City in the Desert opens on a hunter, Irro, and his assistant, Hari, a girl with, as Irro put it, “some of the best attributes of a monkey”—clever, quick, agile, and, uh, a prehensile tail. The father-like Irro appears to be on some sort of solo monster safari—packing unique, homemade weapons, he seems more concerned with taking down the beasts than with studying them. Riding a part-robot part-beast yak-like creature with a monkey-girl at his side, the story seems at first almost like Curious George meets Victorian-era wild game hunters. Had that been the case I would have been perfectly satisfied to read a delightful child-like exploration of this desert world full of strange and mythical beasts and strange, wonderful treasures. What I got was vastly better and more sophisticated.
