Review: Season 2 of Elementary!

This review contains spoilers for all of season two of CBS’s Elementary. Even as a fan of the show, I was not actually expecting the second season of Elementary and its finale to match what it had pulled off in Season 1—namely, because Natalie Dormer is now busy with Game of Thrones and really, Lucy Liu versus Natalie Dormer in a battle of hardcore ladies matching wits with millions of dollars, a global crime syndicate, and one man’s life in the balance? How were they going to top that? The writers still tried, bless their hearts. Which is why, even a week after the finale, I find myself confused at how they managed to underwhelm me even when I was expecting to be underwhelmed.

Zac Gorman's gorgeous animated webcomic series Magical Game Time explores exactly those thoughts. The art's use of texture and muted colors create a perfect isolated and self-reflective feel to the comic, which explores the inner lives of some of gamedom's most iconic heroes as well as sharing the artist's own musings on the way that video games, their stories, and their characters affect the lives of the players.

Today in Indie Comics: Lady Knights and Action Princesses

The tumblrverse tends to get into these creative-concept hiveminds every four-to-six weeks: early this winter it was adorably grotesque monster girls, last month was "murdermaids," and now, with Game of Thrones season 4 looming on the horizon, it appears the internet is going gaga for women warriors and kick-butt queens and princesses. I am very, very okay with this. Besides dogbomber's lady knight generator, which The Mary Sue's Rebecca Pahle has already covered, a slew of indie web- and short-comics featuring lady knights and action princesses have been going viral or been reintroduced into our collective consciousness. In between binge-watching old Xena: Warrior Princess episodes on Netflix and digging out your childhood copies of The Paper Bag Princess and The Song of the Lioness, here are three webcomics featuring heroic courtly women you should absolutely read and support.
