Video Chronicling the Adventures of Luke’s Lightsaber Keeps the Mystery Alive

Put that lightsaber down, you don't know where it's been.

One of the great mysteries of Star Wars: The Force Awakens lies in how Maz Kanata happened to have Luke Skywalker/Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber in that freaky basement in her cantina on Takodana. Dismissing Han Solo’s question along the same lines, Kanata said, “An excellent question for another time.” Apparently that wasn’t enough for film editor Christopher Sherwood, who decided to set up a nice chronologically-ordered video tracking the adventures of the lightsaber. The video covers everything from its “laser sword” origins (thanks, little Anakin) to the biggest twist of the century in Empire Strikes Back, to Rey’s inheritance.

Like Indiana Jones’ hat or Mr. Burns’ Bobo bear, Anakin’s lightsaber has gone on plenty of adventures and journeys, sometimes ones much more daring and exciting than its owner’s. As it stands, there are two, maybe three gaps in its storied history, but regardless, one thing’s for certain: that blue lightsaber’s seen some serious shit, and has definitely cost its masters an arm and a limbliterally.

Sherwood’s quick video provides a really unique look at the lightsaber itself, which is, arguably, a character all on its own. It’s definitely stoked the fires and brought the mystery of its movements to the fore once more. Amidst questions of Rey’s parentage, Snoke’s identity, Han’s final fate (he’s dead, just accept it already), and Finn’s origins, it’s easy to forget that sometimes the smallest things also carry equally impactful mysteries.

I’m curious: what’s your theory as to why Kanata’s got Anakin’s lightsaber?
