Appalachian woman was closing up shop late at night, then a man appeared from the tree line. He warned her: ‘The creature feeds on kibble like you’
At the back of the tree line, there was a man.
Sof (@sof_ttaco) from Appalachia was working late at night at a cleaning business. While closing up at 2:00 a.m. near the woods, she noticed a man by the tree line. What he said stayed with her long after their interaction ceased.
She walked to her car, carrying her cleaning supplies through the gravel parking lot. Sof had her headphones on, listening to a podcast, but stayed alert to her surroundings. She turned it down to listen for animals because, in those parts, she said it was common to see bears, coyotes, and wolves.
“That being said, I heard someone humming from the woodline. I don’t know if you know anything about woodland animals, but I’m pretty sure they don’t know how to hum a tune,” Sof recalled. She’s no stranger to folkloric creatures in Appalachia. Earlier this year, she shared an alleged brush with unexplained creatures from the woods that resembled monsters from The Backrooms.
However, when Sof pulled one headphone off to listen, she realized it was a man. Sof said the man wasn’t singing loudly; rather, it was quiet and barely audible. Sof noted that the man was close by and found the humming strange. She froze, noting that it was the worst position to be in.
A man from the woods appeared
“There is absolutely no reason that a grown man, or anybody for that matter, should be walking around the woods at 2 o’clock in the morning, in the middle of f****** nowhere, Vermont,” Sof said. Aside from the cleaning business, the nearby building was only a school. At this hour, the school isn’t open, and nobody could help. One woman from Ireland had to deal with a drunk man on her own at a tattoo shop and was terrified by the experience. But in Sof’s case, she was both alone and near the woods.
While looking for the source of the humming, the sound abruptly stopped. Then, she started hearing rustling. She believed it was getting closer, so Sof kept walking to her car, alarmed by the sound. Sof said she didn’t try to run outright because it might still be a bear. She reached the back of her car and started putting her things inside the trunk. Sof said the rustling stopped, and as she put the last bottle in the trunk, she started hearing the unsettling humming again. But this time, the noise was coming from directly behind her.
Sof whipped around, and she came face-to-face with the odd man. She said she jolted and hit her car’s bumper. Sof told the man that he scared “the living s***” out of her; however, he allegedly didn’t laugh. Instead, he wore a stone-cold face and allegedly asked, “Have you seen the creature?”
Sof was confused by the question, but scared because it was so late at night. He reiterated the question, but Sof was too afraid to respond. Then, the man allegedly looked past her open trunk and said, “The creature feeds on kibble like you.” She stared at him, unable to process the comment, and thought the man was out of his mind.
Fearful of the man, Sof slammed her trunk shut, kept eye contact, and slowly backed away. She got into her car through the driver’s side, and he started humming the tune again. When she got inside, the man allegedly commented, “Don’t let it hear you leaving.” Disturbed by the comment, she drove fast and cried on the way home. Although she came out unscathed, Sof left horrified by the unexplained encounter.
